Compass reading on GPS 60cSx about 30 degrees too high

Calibrate the compass (Main menu --> Setup --> Calibration --> Compass), follow the instructions on the screen.
Also, see page 50 of the manual.
Calibration must be done outside - stay clear of any large metallic object (e.g. car).

The orginal compass was deleted.

Tom Tom changed the software (one of the upgrades you get through Tom Tom HOME) to remove most of the compass functions but the manual still refers to setting it up so it appears as a menu item when you first operate the unit but then subsequently disappears if you update the unit software as it did on mine.

It is talked about in some of the Satnav forums but there don't appear to be any solutions.

Sorry that is not much help.

New version of software (8.010) takes the compass preferences away. Compass always pointing north is available through the status bar settings. Found this on tomtom support under question, "How do compass settings work?" It has both new and old versions of how to access the compass.

Compass calibration

Hello. First day I use this device, and have found this tips for compass calibration (as I understand, compass calibration depend on satellite signals - so before compass calibration it's better to get good signals from satellites):
- keep device at horizontal plane (as from message "hold level");
- turn it slow, but not too very slow.
It's better don't turn device, but get device at hands, and turn around himself with it with constant slow speed, and keep horizontal level of device - by this way I have a more accurate calibration, than turn just in hands or on the table.
I hope this will help.

Hi, the DOT (Direction Of Travel) arrow will only appear on the Compass page when you are navigating.
  1. Go to the 'Main Menu'
  2. Select 'Find'
  3. Select 'Waypoints'
  4. Select a waypoint
  5. Select the 'Go TO' button
Once you are on the Compass page you should have the DOT arrow as long as you have a sat lock.

Garmin HCx GPS unit

The Vista HCx has an electronic compass. You don't need to be moving for it to work, but you do need to calibrate it. To calibrate the compass:
  1. Go to the Main Menu
  2. Select Setup
  3. Select Calibration
  4. You will be asked "Which Sensor Would You Like To Calibrate", select Compass
  5. You will see a page that says "To Calibrate Compass: Slowly Turn Two Full Circles In The Same Direction While Holding The Unit Level", select Enter and do this.
You need to hold the unit level for the Magnetic Compass to work correctly. The specs for a properly calibrated compass are +/- 5°

Compass dosent work

The compass is very sensitive. Anything magnetic will intefere with its ability to calibrate. Try taking the unit outside, far away from anything metallic, and lay it down on a flat level surface, then follow the compass calibration procedure. Make sure you rotate the unit clockwise and turn it very slowly. If that doesn't work, you could have a defective sensor.

I'm not sure what you're using the compass feature for, but on mine I disable it. It draws the batteries down faster and I find that my track, or course over ground, is more reliable than the compass heading. The only real advantage to the compass is if you want to get a bearing while you are standing still.
