How do you set barometer

Hi George:
I'm used to barometric pressure as related to altimeter setting in aircraft, but the principal is the same.
For an altimeter, If you know the elevation (above sea level) that you are at, and you set the altimeter to that altitude, the barometric pressure showing on the altimeter will be the current barometric pressure.
If you have a barometer without an altimeter, someone would have to provide you with the current setting. That would probably be your nearest weather station, airport, or your computer.
Here's a link to one.

Pressure and tendency refers to barometric pressure.
If you reply as a COMMENT to this post I will try to assist if possible.
Cheers.

What is altimeter means

The altimeter records your elevation above sea level. Useful when mountain climbing, Tour De France cycle racing the mountain section or flying, which I am sure you do almost every day :>)

I have a Suunto X-Lander and i dont get along with the barometer/altimeter. The barometer always shows about 2 mbar below the nearby airport homepage. Can i by myself calibrate the sensor? This even...

Erik, the altimeter uses barometric pressure to determine changes in elevation. Rule one is whenever you know the elevation for a fact, adjust it as the barometer is changing often and therefore affecting the altimeter reading. The only sure way to avoid this is use GPS. Altitude is derived from locating 3 or 4 satellites in a geo syncrohnus(SP?) orbit. Pilots always reset the altimeter before take off and you should too. Find elevations on road signs, maps, etc.

Measuring Tool to Short

You have acouple of options

You can buy a measuring tool that doesn't have a size limit or has a very high size limit, you can check around to find one that will suit your needs.

You can measure the till the end of you measuring tool, mark the spot where it ends, and make another measuerment from that spot.

Another option is to take a long piece of string, and run it between the two points you want to measure, Cut the rope exactly between the two points, and later you can measure it, section by section, this is a lot of work!

I'm sure that these aren't all the possible methods, I think that folks around here might add a few.

Good luck

Elevation Problem

Some models have the Barometric Altimeter which needs to be calibrated, and some units do not.

Vertical Accuracy of a properly calibrated Barometric Altimeter is +/- 10'. If you have a unit that uses provides a GPS Elevation only, a +/- 50' vertical solution is pretty standard.
