SOURCE: Hi,I have a craftsman generator
check the oil in the engine if it is at the correct level then the low oil sensor could be dad causing the engine to shut down you can disconnect the wire from the sensor for this should be just 1 wire make sure the wire don't ground out this is how they work when low oil the switch grounds and kills the engine for safety .
you can use a ohm meter to test the terminal against the block if theirs a reading then it is bad and needs replacement you can run the engine with out it connected but will need to check the oil often hope this helps

try to clean out the carb first with auto parts carb cleaner, then you may need to buy a totally new carb for the unit, as this company will NOT sell parts for these carbs due to the carb setting is sealed & has to stay at a set level for voltage output and setting

check the fuel mixture settings i believe main screw is 1 3/4 turns from closed and the idle screw is set at 1 1/4 turns from closed. These settings are for non OHV models. also check that if you have a fuel filter installed that it is not plugged up.

I have an HM100 on a 5500 watt gen with the same problem. This motor calls for a J17 spark plug, but I found using a J19 (hotter) plug solved the problem. I think the J17 doesn't get hot enough for a complete combustion burn so it act like fuel starvation thus resulting in the black sooty and wet plug.
