Question about Computers & Internet
On the left hand side of my Acer TravelMate Laptop I have a Card slot which I'm guessing would be used for Wireless Internet?
What is this slot called, and would I be better to use the usb slot?
Do you have any opinions on Wireless Internet for interstate travel?
Most laptops would have a slot on the left side for PCMCIA, a standard for small, credit card-sized devices. Often actually, there would be two (2) of them, one on top of the other with a plastic dummy card inserted. These cards could be an add-on modem, NIC/LAN, WiFin even a USB hub or anything else that is PC compatible.
As to whether USB is better than PCMCIA, to my knowledge, USB has a better data transfer speed and to my experience, USB has better radio signals for WiFi. So I guess, USB wins hands down.
Re wireless Internet for interstate travel - honestly no idea, I am across the globe where you are. But as a rule of thumb, if you are getting a subscription with an ISP, then it should be one that provides WiFi Internet in as many states/areas that you intend to travel. Additionally, their coverage (footprint) should be the biggest/widest possible. However, to my understanding, there are a lot of hotspots in most cities.states that do provide free open access through their system.
Incidentally, there are ISPs that provide Internet connectivity using cellphone technology (3G) and presumably, there would be Internet wherever there is a mobile phone signal.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards.
Thank you for using FixYa.
