Question about Seagate FreeAgent Pro - 500GB, 7200 RPM, USB 2.0, eSATA, External 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

My desktop crashed. I lost everything on it. I thought I downloaded some informatin on my Seagate Externa harddrive, however, I am having problems connecting to other computers to see if any information is on the Seagate Free agent Pro 500gb External hardrive. Do I need to load software on these computers a Dell 32gb desktop windows XP, and a HP Pavilion dv5-1250us Entertainment Notebook PC, Windows vista, 64bit? If I can't find my disk is there another way I can download information, software, drivers, whatever I need to do to get it working properly? Britt Montgomery

External hard drives are plug and play, the drivers are build into windows.
IF the hard drive was connected when your computed crashed, and the hard drive was in use, it may have damaged it.
If it does not automatically connect to other PC's looks like it has been damaged

1. Download "MemTest86".
2. Diagnose the computer memory.
3. Check what manufacturer of harddrive you have (Samsung, Seagate etc),
4. Go to their site and download their diagnostics tool for harddrives.
5. Diagnose yor drive.

If everything checks out fine and the error persists try the following:
Download and install "Ubuntu Linux", fairly usable and free.

You can recover the data by connecting this drive to another system or if you have windows operating system just install it choose the repair option. But first you connect this drive to another system as secondary drive and take the backup.

Maxtor 3200

Seagate troubleshooting Error Code 10, states that drive has failed. (Seagate bought out Maxtor)

Before you resign yourself to everything is lost on this harddrive, how about trying one more thing?

How about putting the harddrive inside in a new external enclosure, and see if it works? I suggest that perhaps the external enclosure it's in, is bad.
The harddrive inside is a 3.5 inch harddrive. Same width as used by a desktop computer. It is a Sata harddrive.

Here's an example of a 3.5 inch Sata, external enclosure,

Just pop the external enclosure open that holds it now, take it out, and install it into an external enclosure like the example above. Plug in the USB cable.

Don't know if this applies to your particular Maxtor Personal Storage 3200, but when I went to search for the type of harddrive it uses just now, I ran into thsi, and thought I would pass it along. http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/personal_storage/ps3200-sw)

Crashed hard drive

Seagate File Recovery for Windows is one of the best programs I've used. I had an external drive that was totally invisible to Windows until I popped it with this stuff and was able to retrieve everything on the drive within minutes. The stuff costs $129 but is well worth it. You should download the free trial just to see if it will access your data after which you can decide if it's worth the purchase price to recover everything...

Seagate SATA Baracuda 160 GB harddrive crashed

I've found this to just be the nature of hard drives. You never really can trust them, thats why you always need a backup. Maybe look into a fault tollerant RAID solution if it's really important (kinda expensive)

Seek rate problem in Seagate 200 GB

Hey, I recommend you test the harddrive with seagates own tools.

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/

I recommend the dos version.

Also try active smart
http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/index.html

I would recommend backing up all the data from the drive, and then if the drive still has problems You should send it for warranty repairs. Shouldnt cost a thing.

You can also take it to a local pc repair shop to get all the data copyed and then sent to warranty service if nessasary it will cost thought if you do it via a shop.

Seagate hard drive

if your PC can detect the harddrive as an external drive there is a possibility to recover your files. try using stellar-phoenix, download it at www.warungplus.com, register first then you can use their search facility to browse files. I am using stellar-phoenix for a long time, it works well. Good luck
