It is most likely that the timing is off. This is a repair that needs to be fixed by a repairman. It usually costs between $40 to $125 depending on the service charge plus the labor involved.

SOURCE: I have a Brother 98-Stitch

I dropped my feed dogs and when I pushed the button to bring them back up, it wouldn't work. I did discover that when you put the button back to the up position and start sewing, the dogs come back up automatically.

SOURCE: Shirring fabric?

When putting your shirring elastic on the bobbin, don't thread the elastic through the bobbin holder, adjust the stitch length longer, and loosen the tension, other wise if you want to put it through the bobbin holder you have to loosen the tension screw on the bobbin holder, and then you have to adjust it back for ordinary sewing,

Starting to sew basic stitch

You need to know how to thread the upper thread, wind thread onto a bobbin, and install the bobbin in the machine.

Be sure to lower the presser foot onto the fabric you are going to stitch.

Then press on the foot control pedal (like a gas pedal in a car). The harder you press, the faster it will stitch.

There are a lot of web sites and videos available. But, you should probably read the machine's manual.

My sewing machines picks what stitch it wants to use

Turn the power off and try to move the needle bar back and forth horizontally. Does it move easily? No means the installation position needs adjusted so that it will move easily. The other areas that could be a problem is 1. pulse motor or wiring needing replaced. 2. PC Board needs to be replaced.

Do you have a stitch pattern picked? If, not just try a straight stitch and then see if it moves. Read your manual and it will really explain all about your particular machine. You can download one for free at www.brother-usa.com.
