Question about Iomega Micro Mini 4GB 4200rpm 480Mbps USB 2.0 USB 2.0 External (33361FT) Hard Drive

2 Answers

My 4GB GIGABANK can not access the data on the drive! At one point I could see the data, but I did not try to go further for fear it would corrupt my drive. Is there anything I can do, or a place to send it to recover my files?

Usually what happens on these usb drives is the usb part of the drive fails. The hard drive inside which is a standard drive will be just fine and so will your data.Unless you have a extremely rare situation the drive is fine.

You can send this to a data recovery place and spend about $500 to get your data back.

Or you can buy a new external usb drive enclosure for anywhere from $15 and up and take the drive out of the enclosure and put in in the new one. This is something you can do yourself or just take it to a computer shop and they should do it for say an hours labour charge or less. It only takes about 10 minutes to do but the charge will depend on how busy and greedy the shop is ;-] It's worth calling around and tell them that you want to know how much to take the drive our and put in a new enclosure. If you buy the enclosure from them they may be a bit better on the labour. If your tempted or want to consider doing this yourself just search for usb enclosure instruction on youtube or google and you will find several videos. The hard part will be getting the original enclosure apart as the screws may be hidden or it will use tabs. Putting it in the new one is quite straight forward.

Anyway don;t panic, your data should be just fine unless you are very unlucky. I've fixed a lot of these drives this way and have yet to see a dead drive. I'm sure it happens but not that I've run across.

Try to access the device using "RUN". If that doesn't work, try "SAFE MODE".

The file system has become corrupt and unreadable, or at least a section of it. If you can't reformat it then it's likely dying or dead. At least you should be able to recover some of your data however...

My SanDisk Cruzer Gator 4GB is not working. When

The filesystem appears to be corrupted. Try right-clicking the drive's icon, going to Properties, Tools and Check Disk. If that doesn't help the partition that holds the data may be unreadable, and if that happens try asking a data recovery service if the data is important.

Computer does not read my gigabank 8.0; no access to data

hi,

These drives are pretty sturdy but it sounds like the USB control circuit may be dead.

If this is the case what to do next comes down to what's on the drive. If there is nothing important on the drive which isn't backed up somewhere else. Buy a new one for $30 and recopy the file on the new one. If you need the files on it you can send it out for data recovery, anywhere from $100-$1500 depending on which part failed. I know a few places able to help you if you need this option. If you need the pros reply back with your Country, State and City and I will refer you to an appropriate pro for the job.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

How do I open the case to replace the hard drive of the Toshiba 160GB external hard drive? It is a model # HDDR160E03X.

Just leave it in the case. Unplug it to prevent further damage. Don't worry in many cases you can have the data retrieved from your hard drive by using this online company that I highly recommend:

Cruzer 4GB Zip will no longer read

If your drive does dhow up, but the data is not there there was somehow a short in the drive, like ultimitloozer said if you don't safely remove hardware that short can corrupt data, or delete it. You will need to get a software that searches your drive for corrupt data and see if you can restore it, but that is unlikely. Sorry. However you drive will still work, but you will just need to be careful

IO Magic 250gig external hard drive

Unfortunately the hard drive within the external case has died. The clicking noise you can hear is the read / write heads trying to find anything on the platter and failing, this means that any files that were on the drive are lost. There are many tricks on the net that give hope of recovering data off a dead hard drive but most just corrupt the data completely. If you have files that you must have and can afford the extremely high price for data recovery there are services available through most hard drive manufactures, most notably through Seagate.
