To put it simply what you bought is practically useless - the 1dB gain over your original antenna is negligible.. And the fact that it's not attached outside at the highest point of the boat hasn't helped.
What you need is a much more efficient antenna with a much longer cable that is directional and oriented towards the most powerful hotspot in the region. And you don't even need to pay for it, you can make it yourself as shown here
BTW the internal antenna from the laptop doesn't have any effect but it makes the managing of the wireless harder if it active so just deactivate it with the toggle button on the case.
