Not recording

i am having problems with my dvd recorder. it started when the discs i had recorded on kept behaving oddly. the menu would move up and down all by its self. i replaced the disc with a new one now when i record it looks ok but when i press stop the message reads disc error. i then turn the dvd player off and then back on again and the discs read empty disc. i have replaced the discs several times but cannot get the dvd to record .
