I own a craftsman DLT2000 48" riding mower, the oil drain plug on the kohler engine will not let the oil drain. I am curious how this particular plug works so i can change the oil.

SOURCE: My craftsman 15.5HP kohler riding mower turns over

Try cleaning or better yet, replacing the spark plug. Depending on age and how your tractor was maintained, there are other possible causes.

  • Gummed up fuel system
  • dirty fuel filter
  • defective or misaligned armature/magneto (part that causes your plug to spark, igniting the air/fuel mixture, thus starting the engine)
  • throttle linkage/cable problems
  • low oil level. Some Kohler engines use a low oil shut down sensor which won't allow the engine to run or start to avoid internal damage.
  • Mechanical engine problems

SOURCE: Oil leak on riding Craftsman LT2000 (Kohler)

Fortunately, the engine oil doesn't go through any rubber hoses, so they are mouse-proof. The oil probably leaked out through an engine seal. Oil on the engine surfaces would smoke when it gets hot. Check your oil level and top it up if necessary, before you run the engine again. The engine can run fine even with a slow oil leak; you just have to watch the oil level from time to time. The leak could be easy to fix - by tightening up a few bolts -- or expensive.
The gas runs through rubber hoses, though. If mice ate through that, I think you would have smelled the gasoline, and the engine wouldn't run for more than a few seconds. But if you see a severed hose, you should replace it. Take it off and bring it to a mower shop or auto supply shop, and buy something the same diameter. Inexpensive.
Hope this helped! If so, please rate my answer, thanks!

Kohler engine oil leak

Could have blown a seal however before checking for that I would check the drain plug and filter seating if you changed the filter. Make sure the drain plug is not cross threaded. You can run a little low but should never over fill. Hope this will help. Most of the time if over filled you will get some smoke as well.

Craftsman 42 in mower with kohler command 15.5hp no spark.

Hi, check your oil level incase it has the guardian system on it. If that is ok it may be the coil as kohlers have a habit of them failing, regards Phil.

Where is the oil drain plug located on a craftsman dgt 4000 with a kohler 27 hp engine thanks

Your model number is 917.275.280 Here is your owners manual.

The oil drain is a plastic tube twist affair behind the little yellow cap. You will need a plastic hose to stick on it for convenience sake. Please see page 18.

Oil change instructions and oil recommendation (lost manual)

Hello, oil to use in the engine depends on engine if it is a Kohler you will want to use 10w30 approx 2qts. The Briggs & Stratton engines use HD30 or SAE30 approx 1.5qts. Use the dip stick to ensure you have the right amount and don't over fill.

To change the oil:

  • run engine about 10 minutes to warm up oil so it flows better
  • at the bottom of the dip stick there is either a valve or plug
  • open the valve or plug and let the oil drain (I use an old gallon oil container with a funnel) leave the dip stick out
  • while the oil drains; change the spin on oil filter
  • once all the old oil has drained replace the plug or close the valve
  • wipe down the funnel and use it to refill the new oil
  • use the dip stick to ensure proper fill level
I also recommend that you replace the air filter at the same time, if the engine can't get air is can't run efficiently.

If this is helpful please vote yes, Thank You!!

What weight oil should I use for 16 horsepower craftsman engine?

It all depends on the engine you have...all engines except for KOHLER can use straight 30 and Kohler uses only 10W30.
