Try these steps:
There are usually two belts; one for the deck and the other is called the drive belt. It sounds like the drive belt failed.
Both the drive belt and the deck belt run off the engine by way of a double pulley on the end of the engine shaft. I'm hoping that you're nodding your head right now. That takes care of pulley #1 for the drive belt.
The second pulley is the idler pulley. Its job is to ensure that proper tension is maintained on the drive belt so it does not slip. If your tractor has a manually controlled release, the idler pulley will pivot when the clutch/brake pedal is depressed and the tension will decrease to a level that allows the tractor to sit still. If your tractor has an electronic clutch, the idler pulley will not move when the pedal is depressed and serves only to maintain proper belt tension.
The third pulley is usually on top of the rear axle and supplies power (torque and speed) to the input shaft of the gearbox. If you have a hydrostatic transmission, the rear pulley drives a pump. What's the difference? A hydrostatic transmission doesn't have a gearshift. It only goes forward or reverse depending on how the pedal is depressed.
If you have the mechanical (idler) style, make sure that the clutch Paddy is depressed fully and locked before attempting to replace the belt. Loosen any belt retaining devices (bars or covers) and slide the new belt on.
I haven't had to replace the belt on my hydrostatic tractor (with electronic clutch) yet, but I'm sure that it has an idler pulley too. Most belt-driven systems do. Good luck!
