This sounds like a bad CCD- the part that detects the image and sends it to the LCD screen and memory, in which case the main circuit board would have to be replaced. If it was the LCD, you can get new or used ones on ebay, and try to fix it yourself, but, like I say, I'm not sure it will help, since the menu works, indicating a good LCD, at least from what I've seen.
In these cases, it's usually better to just get a new one on sale, since it can cost a lot to fix.
I saw that other people have had this problem on the net, but noone mentioned what was exactly causing it, but they were mentioning a lot of zoom problems, so it might be time to move on with a different product.
Good luck, thanks for using FixYa, and hope this helps.

Hi,

Play the Recorder Video / Image. Do you see the same Symptoms?

If yes, then you have Bad LCD Panel. You need to replace. The cost of repair might be high relevant to the Cost of the new one.

If the Recorder Video / Image is Fine, it is only a Problem when you are taking the Picture, in that Case, it is Faulty CCD sensor. This hit the Screen many years ago. There were Certain recalls and Extended Warranties. If this is the case, you need to Contact Manufacturer. If there is any recall, they would Repair it. Unless, you could try to Negotiate for the Repair price. I have seen many customer's getting a Goodwill gestures from these companies for Faulty CCD sensor.

For More, you could Read an Old Article :-

Let me know, if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Hi,
This problem can be due to bad CCD sensor unit or probably loose ribbon cable inside.
Open the camera and reseat all ribbon cables linked to the screen.
If the problem is still there then contact Fuji for bad CCD sensor.
Good luck and have a nice day.

I have a HP 4100 printer. Installed new ink.Purple streaks

That's a neat trick. The 4100 is a printer that uses one BLACK toner cartridge. It doesn't print in color. And it doesn't use ink.

Black screen on Kodak M753

You have a bad CCD imaging sensor. Not worth repairing. Very common problem with most point and shoot cameras. Suggest you buy a new camera.

That definitely sounds like impending CCD image sensor failure. As the camera is still under warranty (being only two months old), would suggest that you contact Canon at 1-800-OK-CANON to resolve this issue.
