Good morning, I;m working on a G.E. refrigerator model/series # psh23psr,. this is the dual evaporator model,I am having problems with the fresh food coil freezing up about once a month. I have changed the sensors, the main board, the fans and dampers, [ about ready to change refer] I am having no problems with the freezer. another tech had mentioned to me that G.E. is aware of the problem and there is an after market heater kit that can be installed at fresh food coil and wired into main control board. Are you guys familiar with this fix/ IF SO MAY I HAVE THE INFORMATION PLEASE? I'm getting pretty frustrated and desperate, I appreciate all you can do. FRED.

I appreciate the input, but I did say the fresh food coil was freezing up every few weeks. this is a dual evaporator system[freezer-and fresh food]. the fresh food does not have a defrost system incorporated in it, this is what I'm looking for. I was told that an after production defrost kit may exist that can be wired directly into the main board.

  • papaduck2008 Aug 22, 2010

as i have said, i am having problems with the fersh food coil, there is no defrost circuit there . this is what my request was, there is supposed to be an after market defrost circuit that can be installed and hooked up directly to the main board to prevent the intermittent freezing of the FRESH FOOD COIL . are you or anyone out there aware of this repair?

  • papaduck2008 Aug 22, 2010

if this is true than my next question is why isnt the freezer ciol icing up?

  • papaduck2008 Aug 22, 2010

yes the defrost system on the freezer side is functioning correctly, it is almost as if the three way valve behind the refer is not diverting the flow of refrigerant when the fresh food coil has reached temp, but when i check the coil operation and run a system diagnosis according to tech manual, it says that all systems are go[ apparently it is not seeing the big chunk of ice that i am]

  • papaduck2008 Aug 22, 2010

thanks for trying, i can't find any info either. the diagnostic checks say everything is working well but it obviously isn't

Does the fresh food coil work off of the refrigerator temperature setting? If it does, try turning down the refigerator a notch. If it doesn't and it has an auto-set or whatever,I would contact G.E. to find out about what may control it and how to change it.Also,if G.E. is aware of the problem,I think they would issue a recall or TSB about it and if you registered it when you bought it they would automatically notify you.And even if they haven't,you need to insist that THEY supply whatever may be necessary to fix the situation at THEIR expense, including installation. If you are not sure about the coil temperature control,I would call them, and if the refrigerator does control it,try it and wait.If not,be very persistent about getting it corrected because it is a design flaw of some sort.It sounds like you haven't had it for long...maybe 1 yr and 1 month since it has a 1 year warranty?
lol, just trying to brighten you up Good luck! Greg

I tried to find information about this model, but nothing came up on the recall sites. I did run across this page that shows a motherboard, and explains about the crisper control, and how it can be set to quickly chill things, or keep them at a certain level. I'm wondering if your controls are part of the problem, since you've changed everything else. I could not find a recall list that had this unit on it, so I would contact GE and see if they have some updated information about this, or call an authorized GE Service Center and get a number for them.
Wish I had more, but I didn't see a lot of info on the net concerning this.

I believe this may be it
http://www.amazon.com/WR51X442-Refrigerator-Defrost-Heater-Thermostat/dp/B003BIGDIQ
Generally there are heater kits for the lines and not the coils, sounds like improper airflow but you said that you have replaced the fans. Very strange. Anyway, give that a try and let me know how it works out for you.

Dear Fred,
Just to put matters clear, I have not seen in your report that the auto timer was checked or replaced.
I think most of the fridges have fault with the auto timers failing- normally 8 hours cycle-. So if you have not checked this part please see after shutting off the fridge and then starting after defrost if the timer works after the set time to cut off and switch on the heaters to defrost.
You can also have it tested in bench.
Please comment if this could be the issue.

Still not received any reply to my post. I still have the feeling that you must check the timer to confirm it or the fault must be looked into the associated circuit.

Could it in nay way the wiring to the timer controller be interchanged accidently?

Re:"another tech had mentioned to me that G.E. is aware of the problem "

A:I did research and did not find any service number or GE bulletin regarding this model.

Re:"fresh food coil freezing up about once a month. I have changed the sensors, the main board, the fans and dampers"

You should have changed the defrost thermostat (p.244 in diag below), not the sensor (p.233).

Do a complete defrost overnight, if that temporarily solve the problem, check evaporator parts, if problem is evap. system the problem will come back in days or weeks.

If problem is not the evap system, check the ventilation system. The fact that coils are freezing indicate that there is a problem with evaporator.

Check also MOTOR DC EVAP FAN ASM (MOTOR EVAP DC)

You are making confusion in a couple of point on how your fridge work. If model is the one in diagram, then if the coil is freezing you have to replace defrost thermostat.I checked schematics before posting I am not guessing. Sorry about the waste of time in working on your fridge.

After your request the question will be passed to a different expert.

    Good luck and goodbye.

The fact that the fresh food coil is located inside the fridge does not change anything, the defrost thermostat serves both coils. The two coils are connected, if the main coil gets too cold performance of the second evaporator in fridge section is still affected. If replacing thermostat does not work, have a look at check valve and 3 ways valve, and check pressure. Also ensure that fresh food fan is working.

The defrost thermostat is a $11 part.

    goodbye.

The fresh food evaporator has also a thermistor (part WR55X10025), ensure that this is the sensor that you have replaced.

If problem is none of the above (main thermostat, valve and fresh food evap thermistor, then the coil must be pierced to recharge gas, that job is better done by a technician.

As first step ensure that the main evaporator thermostat has no problem, at least read Ohms at its contact and ensure that it is shorted at room temp (zero or low impedance). Do the same on evap thermistor.

A refrigerator that I bought second hand but has worked remarkedly well and still does with one exception. Is it worth fixing.

Of course it is worth fixing! This leak is cause by a defrost drain that is blocked with ice and sludge. I really can't tell you how to remove that rear panel unless you provide a model number. This problem is worse with the Samsung dual evaporators as the evaporator inside the fresh food compartment is usually the one that causes problems on those models. There are a few GE dual evaporator refrigerators also that are really a Sumsung with the GE brand name. How do I access the evaporator fan on side by side model FRS6LR5EW3

Good Morning Friend,

I understand the freezer portion is working on your Frigidaire refrigerator, model# FRS6LR5EW3, but your refrigerator does not seem to be as cool as it should. I also see you want to know how to access the evaporator fan. Typically, this is not a do it yourself repair, as there are no step by step instruction manuals. I suggest contacting your local authorized technician for further assistance. They have been trained on your appliance and should be able to access the evaporator fan with ease. Hope this is helpful.

Where is the defrost timer on a frigidaire fghn2844lf2

Good Morning Debbie,

I see that you are looking to see what turns on the defrost timer and evaporator fan on your Frigidaire refrigerator, model# FGHN2844LF2. Your appliance comes equipped with an Adaptive Defrost Control (ADC). To activate manual defrost, simultaneously press and hold the Fresh Food up (+) and Fresh Food down (-) keys for 5 seconds. A "d" in the freezer temperature window and "F" in the refrigerator temperature window will display when the heater is activated. To deactivate manual defrost, simultaneously press and hold the Fresh Food up (+) and Fresh Food down (-) keys for 5 seconds. A "d" and "F" will be displayed until the defrost cycle is complete. I hope this is helpful.

Water inside refrigerator

Because your model has an evaporator located inside the fresh food compartment it also will have a drain opening below that evaporator. This is a common problem with these dual evaporator models that have drain blockage caused by ice or gunk blocking the drain and causing water to flow below the crisper drawers. Sea Breeze

Refrigerator warm but freezer still working good

Could you possibly tell me if your freezer is frosting over on the rear wall and the model number. Some models have auto dampers between the freezer and fresh food compartment and it could be a defrost problem. Maytag made so many different variations of your model I will need to know which one to give a good answer, Some models had dual evaporators one in freezer and the other in the fresh food compartment. But I will tell you what is going on if you write me back. Maytag numbers look like this MSD2660KG for example, I will look for your response soon. Sea Breeze

Refrigerator not working

Sounds like a possible defrost system failure, there are multiple components in the defrost system that can trigger this symptom(defrost heater, defrost timer, thermostats) if the freezer cannot go through the defrost process the frost will build up on the evaporator restricting air flow, the freezer will seem to work, but early signs will be fresh food section will start to get warm. Good luck!

Whirlpool Refrigerator fresh food section cool but not cold (freezer ok).

The most likely problem is in the defrost system. Behind the freezer panel there is not only an evaporator fan, but also the evaporator itself, and a defrost heater, termination bi-metal, and drain pan (or trough). You will likely find ice build-up in the evap coil. This could be caused by the defrost timer, the heater, or the termination bi-metal.
Have a service tech look at the unit.

GE fridge: Freezer working but fresh food side not cold

The problem is the refrigeration evaporator, located in the freezer section is blocked with frost and ice and not air can pass through it. Four different failed parts can cause this problem. The defrost timer, the defrost heater safety thermostat, the defrost heater, or the evaporator fan motor. Unless you are very good with a volt-ohm meter, it wiil be difficult to distinguish which one of these parts has failed. A qualifed refrigeration service tech or a good appliance service tech with a refrigeration certification can find this quickly.

Kemore brand - freezer works fine, refrigerator not cold,

The fresh food side is cooled by the freezer side through a duct between the two. It will have a small door that opens or closes depending on how cool you want the fresh food side. The door opens more as you adjust the temp for the fresh food side colder. If the duct is blocked in any way, then it would be like setting the temp setting for the fresh food side warmer and warmer. The freezer would be cold and the fresh food side would be warm. Set the temp to midway. Check for any obstructions to this duct. The evaporator fan is what moves the air to the fresh food side.. If the evaporator fan is not working, this could vary well is the problem. You may have to check the evaporator coil to see if it is frosted up enough to restrict air flow over the evaporator and to the fresh food side. If this helps you find your problem, please rate me. If there is anything else I can help you with, please ask. I am here to help you.

Refrgerator side gets to cold

Possible bad thermister or temp sensor. Part # wr55x10025. Your unit is a dual evaporator system. So fresh food side is independent from freezer. That would be the most likely cause. It retails for $14.00 from ge parts online. Good luck.
