When I turn the cpu on, for a while it would boot to windows XP and then freeze. Now, it will not boot at all. It flashes Compaq screen, then it goes to either blank screen with flashing underscore, stays at compaq screen with no response to keys, or beeps twice and goes to screen saying "Press to resume, to setup and freezes there. No matter how long you leave it on or how many times you turn it off and back on, it does the same thing. I have tried the system recovery disk, and powering up without the battery. I am currently deployed in Baghdad, Iraq with my Army unit so supplies would have to be orderes from the states. This is my only means of communication with my wife and two children so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thnk you for your time and help.

Please select F1 to boot the Notebook into windows. If it is not booting then please try to boot the Notebook into safemode.
Restart the Notebook and keep pressing F8 key the select Safe mode to boot. If the issue persists in Safe mode. To isolate whether the issue is with the software or hardware. Please restore the Notebook to factory settings. Before restoring the Notebook backup your data.
If you are unable to restore, I am afraid that you need to take the Notebook for repair.
Do u have installed recently, some software? Try to boot up pressing the F8 button, when the menu appears select the option "Windows in safe mode" if u can boot to windows. View our software installed. If it is not software try, boot whit the windows installation disk enter to the setup and select the option repair, u will go to a DOS prompted window (all black whit white letters) must appear "c:\" used the command "chkdsk /f /r" let it run he will try to find any problem in the disk.
Well, you can install XP as long as you have a CD and your laptop has a COA with a key.
Hit delete, F2 or F10 to start the system in setup, change the order of boot devices to make the CD your primary boot device. Restart, boot into the CD and follow the prompts. After you complete your installation you can go to www.hp.com SUPPORT and DOWNLOADS and find whatever drivers you are missing. Take your time and you'll do fine.
