I have run into a couple of issues with these. First is the traveling wheels sometimes don't lift high enough or fall The second is that the unit sometimes works better with cement ballast added to the top of the unit. This may not be your issue at all, but I hope it helps. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance:)

What do you furtlise Hydrangers with?

I love these plants for their ease of growing and spectacular colours!
The answer to your question partially depends on what colours you have or want. Other than that they pretty much grow anywhere in a good sunny spot, and unless your soil is terrible, they dont need fertilising, just plenty of water. If you do fertilise then everyday fertiliser is fine but depending on its composition it may change the colour of the flowers.

This excerpt is from a web page listed below:
"Hydrangeas are amazingly versatile in that you can actually alter the flower colours to suit your needs. The flower colour in most forms relates to the acidity or alkalinity of the soil. In acid soil (pH 5 or less) hydrangeas are usually always blue. As the soil pH climbs towards the neutral and alkaline end of the scale (pH 7 or more) hydrangeas turn mauve, pink and red. A blueing tonic (containing aluminium and iron) will turn pink or mauve hydrangeas blue. It should be applied once a month in March and April and again in August, September and October, following the directions on the pack. A cup of lime (calcium carbonate) added to the soil in spring will cause blue or mauve hydrangeas to turn pink. White flowering hydrangeas will remain white regardless of soil pH."

How many pounds of soil for 50 gallon container

That's a loaded question, lol. It depends on the type of soil and moisture content. Also, if you are trying to figure out how much soil you need, soil is sold in square yds which would need to be converted to square feet with such a small amount needed in a barrel. Here's one conversion site:

How does vegetation allow greater infiltration?

Vegetation creates more porous soils by both protecting the soil from pounding rainfall, which can close natural gaps between soil particles, and loosening soil through root action. This is why forested areas have the highest infiltration rates of any vegetative types.

What kind of soil do they like?

I know this is an old post and I didn't see it until now. I missed helping last year, but if you have the same question....

They grow best in rich, well-drained soil with a basic pH (they like more alkaline than acidic). If your soil is naturally acidic, adding lime will help to provide these conditions. They are also heavy feeders. The addition of compost or manure to the soil as well the use of granular fertilizer will result in healthier, stronger plants.

What are cultivating tools? My neighbor said I have to buy some if I want to start gardening?

Cultivating tools are the tools needed to perform the tasks from breaking up the soil and preparing it for seeding to keeping the weeds out of the garden . The size of the garden and the type of soil determine how complex your tool collection. A 10' x 10' plot with soft soil could be handled with as little as a spade to break up or turn over the soil, a garden rake to level for seeding, and a weeding hoe to keep the weeds at bay. A larger garden with harder soil may require a power tiller to prepare the soil for seeding and there are countless types of hand and power tools to help with the task of weeding and soil conditioning. There are many inexpensive gardening books to help get you started. I recommend that you do some reading to see what you are getting into.
