Make sure your kill switch is off, check battery voltage across terminals, should be 12.6 volts. Check for loose connections at battery, starter and at frame ground.

Starter removal

It's quite a process to remove a starter on a sportster. I changed one for my friend on his 03 sportster. You have to take alot of stuff off to get to the bolts that hold it on. Can I suggest getting a service manual for the bike. Trust me it's worth its weight in gold. I've done alot of work on my sportster and my friends sportster and would never attempt anything without the book. As far as the starter, From what I remember, I had to remove the exhaust pipes then the primary cover, and I'm sure there were more parts, but you need to know what gaskets you will need to replace. Good Luck. And go get the book. I got mine at Barnes and Noble. and my friend got his at the Harley dealer. Have fun.

2003 883 sportster wont start

What u are describing is typical of a faulty ignition system, but could also be a fuel problem. I check by removing the aircleaner and rotating the throttle. If u see a nice spray of fuel, thats probably not the problem. Check for a spark at the plugs. I can explain how if you need me to. If you cant see a good spark, U have an electrical problem. I had a crank position sensor go bad on me. Dont do what I did (replaced the battery, ignition, and regulator as part of my diagnosis procedure)

Oil in airfilter 883 sportser

Everyone has oil in their airfilters. Harleys are engineered to vent the crankcase thru the carberator. Some oil will get into the filter. There is nothing wrong and thats not whats causing your bike to run ruff unless u have a paper filter thats clogged with oil, in which case I would recommend replacing it with an after market filter that is designed to be oiled like from K & N which are washable and reusable .

Oil amount

It's going to hold approx 3 quarts. The dipstick is irrelevant, the level should be just bellow the bottom of the filler tube, about a half inch, so you should be able to see the oil when you remove the cap. I'm not sure why HD even puts the dipstick on the cap.

My transmission/clutch

The tranny on these are bullet proof. So, this is most likely going to be the clutch. I say most likely, because I thought my clutch had gone out here recently on my Softtail, but when I got the clutch assembly off, it turned out to be the front drive belt pulley. They're aluminum, and spun the splines out., so keep this in mind if the clutch is good. Since this is an 883 that makes it easier to inspect the clutch. You'll need to pull the primary cover, check the clutch cable mechanism inside the cover, and check the friction plates on the clutch. You should be able to see if the frictions have any pad left, and the cable mechanism will be easy to tell if there's anything wrong with it. Use new primary fluid, and get a new primary gasket, do not reuse the old, especially the gasket. Although it may look good, even the smallest separation in the gasket will cause a leak. Good luck, and let me know how it turns out.

Starting my bike

first off bro the 883 does not become a 1200 by boring the cylinder. there is absolutely no difference in the size of the cylinder of a stock 883 or 1200. to make the displacement bigger by 317 cc's the head dome is made larger. you can make any 883 a 1200 by carving out the inside of the head to increase the volume. to make this increase in displacement by boring the cylinder would require making the inside of the cylinders bigger than the outside which obviously can't be done. your starter is probably getting hot due to poor electrical connection. most likely in the ground pathway. if you dont have good continuity the amps go way high and the starter gets hot. you can have all the voltage in the world but if you can't carry the amps then the thing will click and and overheat. check your cables and make sure no corrosion also if you painted your bike then the paint on the frame needs to be scuffed off where the ground strap connects

Oil cap blasting off

Your crankcase is not breathing right. Re-Check your lines going into the air filter back plate, make sure the lines are not kinked in any way. Also make sure the lines are not dry rotted.
