Akai plasma tv 5 blinking red lights PDP4298ED

It wont power on, i see the red light go odd responding to pressing the button, i hear the click, no power.. red light on. press it again, it clicks and then 5 blinking red lights. no image on sceen, unable to get it to show menu, etc. I may replace the power board first,-- but could it be something else? the main board, or the 2 above it,? it seems a easy fix to me, anyone had any luck here? thanks so much!!!! i have photo's too...!!

I have the same problem. The voltages are wrong on the Powersupply, however I replaced the powersupply because the service manual had said to in this case, but it did not resolve the problem.. I'm not sure where to go with it now.

thanks DodgeA, do you happen to have the service manual? the search is illusive. Crossing my fingers, i hope the power supply fixes it. I'd say next, try the mainboard under the two siamise twin boards at the bottom, under the plate (another set of screws) and there is the main board... I wanted to try to replace the cables to, but what can you do. still trying, Let me know how it goes!

    so....

Here is my board that i ordered for replacement, as you can see, the
top left second in --cap IS BLOWN. so i think i can either, use a cap
from my other board into this and see if it works, or.....test out my
current board, and use this board for parts.

    any suggestions, that be great.

I do have two of them, one is blown, and not on the heatsink.. I just went to Fry's and couldn't find it as a replacement. . It seems i need part- c524... also c523 (other one you told me to replace) , but no listing on the part.. just: P0.22K400, COULDN'T FIND ANY .22K OR 400V at frys.. found 222k, and .22 but only 125v..so... i might pull them off my other board and put them here. we see. getting ot of my hands a bit.

  • Kris Luettchau
    Kris Luettchau May 10, 2008

Definately. thanks It' interesting, one board shows P0.22K400, and is a "SHINSHIN" , and the other shows P224K 400 and is also a shin shin but right below the lettering is T07. i can see it is bulging, but still in the plastic.

  • Kris Luettchau
    Kris Luettchau May 13, 2008

Ordered them. they ran about 2.02$ a piece. it's the .22 you want to get... the .00 and the .0 are too little. it's a .22uf.. i saw those little ones at fry's. no go. ordered these fromhttp://www.tubesandmore.com/, they run out of Arizona.. Let you know when I get them. Oh! and remember to use a heat diffuser when soldering can bust the drop at least it's what i read. what do i know...... between the drop and the board, just use a aligator clip or something to difuse.. Let you know when i get my tv up and running.. (crossing fingers)

Got a plasma tv free, guy said it was power supply wont turn on just red light.... no sound no tv... all.First plasma attempt open for me. Anyhow, i got a second board on ebay for 10bucks, (thought i could use it for parts).. both seem so so... but when i took your advice, i took a closer look and all 4 orange drops are swolen/ one busted. so im going to try to replace this first. I still dont know what 5 blinking lights mean, or how to check the voltage using a micrometer. So im winging it, i have friends who solder, so that' all im doing. Got any suggestions otherwise?

Im really glad about your positive outlook on fixing the problem. So this replacement method solved your issue take it...i hope it solves mine also. I did order about 6, so i have a few extra case the soldering job gets boffed. IT seems simple enough, about the widest spaced solderpoints on the whole board. should be here by Friday. Whooot! (Fingers crossed)

    "

    It's very
easy to measure the voltage. Sometimes requires a steady hand though. All you
need is a multimeter or voltmeter. One can be had at Harbor Freight Tools for
$3 which is very cheap for an ok multimeter. I have like three of them. They
usually run $20 at normal retail. There is two probes. A black and a red. With
the board in the tv and powered on, use the black probe to touch the aluminum
backing of the tv set and with the red probe, you can use either of the white
connectors at the top sides of your ps board because they have the same pins.
They each are labeled like VS for each pin in the connector. Use the red probe
to touch that pin. You should get a reading of around 90v. The voltages should
be listed on the aluminum backing of the tv screen near the top right on a
sticker. If you need the voltages just let me know.

Have you checked the voltages on your board? In my board the VS voltage was low. It could be that cap on yours. Try to replace it. All the caps on my board were all bloaded and looked like they are going to explode but after replacing them, it didn't solve the problem. Try this. In your picture, there is a capacitor that is a brownish red color. It is between the 2 green transformers and the long heat sink with that orange circle sticker. There actually should be 2 of them. In your picture there's only one. It will still work with one but 2 will help. Try replacing those and see what happends.

  • Ter Xiong May 09, 2008

Oh you do have 2 of them. Sorry I didn't see the second one sitting on the heat sink.

  • Ter Xiong May 09, 2008

Probably the only place you can find it is online. Like digikey.com or futurlec.com. I like digikey because they are running 24 hours. Futurlec is nice and has many parts but the shipping takes long. Like a week and a half. There parts ship from Thailand so that probably makes it take long. About the part, no ones certain of what value the cap is. It's either .022uf or .0022uf. The caps are very cheap. Like 15 cents each. I may just order both sets and put them in and see what it does to the voltage. I'll get extras incase people here need them.

  • Ter Xiong May 14, 2008

Ok now back to the beginning. So your tv went black and you ordered a new PS and it didn't work? So you have two PS?

  • Ter Xiong May 14, 2008

$2.02 is a little high priced. Actually should be about half for one but it's ok. As long as it works. The good thing is that it's closer to me in California. I shop at digikey.com but they are in Minnesota. At futurlec.com most parts are only around 15 cents but they are in Thailand and shipping takes a very long time. About 2 weeks.

  • Ter Xiong May 14, 2008

Ok. So I guess the new board you ordered on ebay didn't work then. I was just wondering why you needed to fix when you already ordered a new PS. So both boards have the same problem. Hope you ordered enough caps for both. Replace the caps on both boards and test both boards to see if the tv works again. That means you'll have an extra working board. That'll be good. A spare or you could sell it.

What I did was used the good PS's caps and put them in the bad PS. Now the bad PS works so now I know that all I need is replacement caps for the other board.

  • Ter Xiong May 14, 2008

I wonder why other people don't comment back on this site except you. Do they need help or what? I wish this site was more like a forum. That would make it easier.

  • Ter Xiong May 15, 2008

I got my new caps. Was going to order but decided to check out this electronics shop I usually go to. I don't like to buy stuff there because it's very expensive. They quoted me $5 for a transistor that I bought online for 50 cents. I checked it out anyways and saw the caps I needed. They were $1.70 each which is not too bad. So I bought 2 of them for my PS board. I soldered them in and now my power supply board has normal voltage to the VS again.

    Here are my new caps.

Old one on left. New one on right.

Type 224K 400v on ebay which should display a orange capacitor as this is the correct part for a po.22k400 shinshin (0.22uf 400v), paid $14.99/ £9.10 for 90 capacitors, common problem for 42" plasma which has no image displayed when turned on but can hear sound.

I had the same problem with a 52" Samsung LCD. I found 2 electrolytic caps with bulging tops on the power supply board. (see pic). I looked to be the 5v section but I'm not sure. I got replacement at Fry's for $1.90 each. All is well!

Can someone tell what this all means and why Samsung changed from the previous values. the board is V3 bn96-012117a

24mm long is what it should measure, not 22mm

I was unable to locate those caps in the Los Angeles area.
I got 2 caps from Electronics Supply Co, Inc in Kansas City, MO (800)669-3752 www.eskc.com.
It's an NTE brand part number MLR224K400 and this is NTE's data sheet for this part http://www.nteinc.com/capacitor_web/pdf/mlr.pdf
You want to get a .22 cap that's 400V and it measures no more than 22mm long.
Just a couple of bucks each plus USPS.
My TV is back in service since a week a go and I hope it'll stay like that for a long time.
Thank you all.

Well, it';s been a while and my tv is still working, so yea, it fixed the issue.
I got these caps at a local repair place caled RVac, or i think it changed names. anyways, i brought it in and they gave me a green one to replace. works fine. color not important, just take #'s down, or take cap to location hope this helps.

Code for a universal remote control used on a akai. No codes listed in the instructions for using will work with an akai television set

Hello
Three digit universal code for Akai TV are:
002/ 003
Four digit universal remote codes for Akai TV are:
0105 0002 0077 0254
Direct Code Entry
  1. Press and hold the SETUP button until the red indicator stays on, then release the SETUP button.
  2. Press and release the desired Mode button (TV, VCR, etc.). The red indicator blinks, then stays lit.
  3. Enter the 4 digit code from the code tables. Note: after a valid code entry, the red indicator turns off. For an invalid code, the red indicator flashes.
  4. With your device on, press CHANNEL UP. If the device responds, no further programming is required. Note: If some buttons do not operate your device, try one of the other codes for your brand.
Code Search If after trying "Direct Code Entry" your device does not respond, or if your brand is not listed, try doing a search of the code library for your code by following these steps.
  1. Manually turn on the device (TV, VCR, etc.) to be controlled.
  2. Press and hold the SETUP button until the red indicator stays on, then release the SETUP button.
  3. Press and release the desired Mode button (TV, VCR, etc.). The red indicator blinks once, then stays on.
  4. Press the CHANNEL UP button repeatedly (up to 300 times) until the device to be controlled changes channel. The red indicator blinks, then stays lit.
  5. Press and release MUTE to install the code. The indicator light goes off.
Most users will want to store VCR codes under the VCR button, Cable codes under CBL, etc. If you want to store a VCR code under CBL, etc., first follow the procedure for Direct Code Entry and press CBL in step 2 of Direct Code Entry, then enter ANY VCR code in step 3 of Direct Code Entry. Then follow the steps above for Code Search.
OK.

MY Pioneer Plasma PDP RO6U is not responding. The Standy light and Rec Time lights were both red and would not turn on either by remote or by pressing the on button on the receiver. I have unplaugged it...

DO any of the lights blink when this is happening? Do you hear any clicking noise before the lights turn red. I mean multiple clicks?
Please provide this info so that we can continue with the diagnosis.
