Question about Panasonic PT-53WX54 53" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

Sylvania TV My Sylvania TV/DVD/VCR Combo has a line in the middle of the screen, going from the left all the way to the right. It is the picture, but it's all scrunched up in this thin line. Above and below it, the screen is black. What's wrong with it? I don't know the serial number or model number. It is a big TV and I got it in December 2002 or 2003. Please help.

This is called a "collapsed" picture. it is normally a simple repair for a tv technician. simple for them but almost impossible for the average consumer. if the set is fairly new and not under warranty it might be worth your effort to take it to a tv repair place and get an estimate on the repair cost and go from there. if it is an old set it is time for a new one.

it could be that the tv convergence circuit is going bad. One shure way of finding out is to go to the tv feature menu(picture, audio etc.) and select the customer convergence setting, you should get a cross hair pattern(cross in middle of screen). that cross should be white and by aligning the red or blue colors they should move left, right, up or down

Curved blue lines on screen.

You have a completely different problem. The screen voltage for the blue picture tube is slightly too high on your set. This will put fine lines in the background of the picture, called retrace lines. This is very common and easy to correct. Remove the front speaker cover and the access panel behind it. Look inside and you will see a black box with six controls, each control having a little white glue on it. This is the Focus/Screen block. Three controls are labeled Focus and three are labeled Screen. The screen control in the center is for green but I am not sure if the screen control on the left or right is for blue for your model. With the TV on, set it to VIDEO 1 but do not connect anything to the VIDEO 1 jacks. This will produce a pure dark picture, showing any faint lines in the background. Choose one of the screen controls and increase (turn clockwise) it slightly. If the blue lines do not get brighter it means you are turning the red screen control, so put it back where it was and choose the other screen control. When you find the blue screen control, decrease (turn counter-clockwise) it until just when the blue lines are gone. If you want you can check that the red and green screen controls are set to just below the point where their faint lines are visible. When done, replace the panels and your picture will be back to perfect.

Line going thru the tv

Josh, When you say a line going through your TV is it a line from left to right or top to bottom? Is there a picture present and this is a line imposed on the picture or just a line by itself? Let me guess, you have no picture just a horizontal line (from left to right) across the middle of the screen. If so that is collapse of the vertical deflection and most likely caused by failure of the vertical IC and possibly linked to some bad caps in theat circuit as well. It's not an expensive repair, just find a good reputable shop. You might also mention, or if they ask, that your unit is a lighbox. Meaning that when they go to repair it the insides of the unit separate from the cabinet for easier access.. Good Luck Bill
