Intermatic makes a timer for window air conditioners its the same design and only a few bucks more is more robust . I just tested my 175 mh lamp and it draws 1.9 amps on start up the amps go down after it starts.. harbor freight has a cool timer also (cheap) But please try to buy the timer made in the good old USA ....Jay

The metal halide lamps come in two versions the regular one and the HQI version. These lamps are very useful to the aquarist needing a lot of light. Their commonly come in 250,400 and 1000 watt sizes. The bulbs range in lifetime from 6000-10000 hours.

I purchased a 1875 watts Timex Heavy Duty timer Model # 12-881 to connect to my 1200 watt water distiller. The timer is burned and has melted where the distiller was plugged in. We were furtunate...

Timex 12-881 timer has 3-prong outlet and is rated 15amp 1875 watts.

The timer melted because too much amperage was drawn across the connection and timer got hot.
Different things can cause this.
Phony rating, and/or mis-manufactured timer.
Defective timer.
If distiller has a motor, then it will draw more amps at start-up.
Timer is rated for incandescent light bulbs only.
Many timers say 1875 watts resistive, but instruction sheet will show 1000Watts incandescent and 1/4 HP horsepower.
Timer is plugged into extension cord.
Cheaply built product, not meant for constant use.
Timer outlet and distiller plug did not meet firmly, so connection heated up.
Turn off distiller before plugging into outlet so no spark is at the connection point.

I recommend appliance timer for operating appliances.
For example Intermatic HB 113 timer.

I have an old "Intermatic Time-All." I no longer

Most time-all timers have two different trippers on dial.
Push down and rotate tripper to desired ON time and OFF time.
Then manually rotate dial until current time lines up with a mark or arrowhead.

To replace timer with new one:
Buy TN311c with 3 sets of on-off trippers that push onto dial, and 3-prong outlet.

Buy TN111c with 2 sets of on-off trippers, and 2-prong outlet

My Tn111 timer is running hot with just a fan running

TN111 timer should not be hot.
All electrical devices generate heat, but the clock motor inside TN series is around 3Watts, and should put off same heat as 3 watt light bulb.
This timer is rated for inductive loads like a fan, up to 1/3 HP (horsepower). Some timers are incandescent only and are not rated for fans or HP loads.
1) Try plugging timer into different outlet and to different Load (light, fan)
2) Test outlet with cheap circuit analyzer from home center to make sure outlet is wired correctly.
3) This line of timers has limited 1 year warranty

I bought timer model #402A. It says 1250 watts tungsten rated. Here is my question: I have a demhumifier that draws 1800 watts-can I use the timer and what does 1250watts tungsten mean? Thank you.

1250 watt tungsten: Tungsten is the tungsten filament in light bulb.
So 402A timer is rated for light bulb only and not dehumidifier motor load.
1800 watt dehumidifier will burn 402A timer, and could start a fire.
I suggest Intermatic heavy-duty appliance timer HB113C:

How to set time

You posted under Intermatic TN11C timer.
If you have a different timer, then add a comment and describe timer, or add a comment and include photo of your product for best answer.

TN timer comes with red and turquoise trippers
Red OFF tripper #107TN222
Turquoise ON tripper # 107TN221

Place trippers around outer edge of dial at on-off times you select.
Turn lamp ON, plug lamp into timer, plug timer into wall.
Manually rotate dial clockwise to watch lamp turn on-off.
Move switch on top of timer both directions to see how to set switch.
After setting switch and trippers, manually rotate clock dial until current time line up with arrowhead located on inner dial.
Dial rotates as time passes, and trippers push switch that turns lamp on-off

I have 4 of the Intermatic TN111C plug-in Timers and all four of them after a few months use have a constant grinding noise which is very annoying. What causes this?

Sound is probably the motor that rotates clock dial.
TN111C is solid timer that should last.
Test outlet with circuit analyzer to make sure reversed polarity is not causing unexpected problem.
