Question about RCA 20F420T 20" TV

Open Question

Starting 1 month ago my RCA TruFlat started turning off on its own. I'll be watching a show (usually coming up on a good part...) and suddenly the blue back screen will close and the T.V. will turn off, and the red standby light in the front will turn on, and then I can hear this crackling sound in the back. Once it turns off and the light in the front turns on, I can immediately turn it on again. And when I go to turn it on the audio will come on but no video. And usually within 3 seconds of just having audio, it'll turn off again (almost as if it has to recharge?). But if I wait a couple hours without turning in on, and then turn it on, I have a higher chance of getting it to stay on. The longer I wait, the more easily it turns on. But once I succeed in turning it on, within an hour it turns off on its own again!! I've tried unplugging and replugging it, plugging it into different outlets, with and without an extension cord, cleaning the two plug tips, using both the button on the TV (while hiding the remote under a blanket) and on the remote, blowing into the back vent from top and from bottom (maybe to clear some dust), putting it on the ground and on a different dresser and moving it around and banging on the side once or twice. What's weird is that when I put it on the ground and am successful in turning it on, when it turns off on its own later there's purple in the upper left corner? This is very strange. Also, when I turn it on, I've noticed that if there's a lot of white sparks along the border of the screen the instant I push the power button, I have a higher chance of being successful. But usually, immediately after I turn it off, if I try to turn it on again shortly after then there will hardly be any white flash on the borders. But lately, it seems to have gotten worse and worse. I just tried turning it on 5 minutes ago after having been gone for 2 days. It had plenty of white flash along the border but it still turned off on its own within 3 seconds of just audio. What does this all mean? I tried to give as many details as I can think of right now, do I have to get a new TV? I've researched this on Google and it seems like many people have problems with RCA Truflats...

The first thing in this unit is to check the ribbon cable that goes from the front control panel to the back ssb board, I would unplug and replug to make sure seated properly. Then try it again. There are alot of screws to take out but worth it if this solves the problem.

Hey this same thing happened to me not too long ago and you just have to buy a Universal remote and program it (it should come with the codes to program it to your TV) I think the code is 704 or 702 for RCA... Anywho after that then you can turn your tv back on wit the remote and push menu and Preferences and then FPA off. Its just a parental control block so your kids cant touch the tv buttons and mess with your settings.

problems with crts are difficult to diagnose. this could be due to a failing tube or faulty electron gun...It is probably best to call in a technician to take a look.

I have a problem with my RCA 52" big screen...1 yr and 3 months old was having no probs with it and one day while watching it seemed like the video in the projection just slipped and now I need 3D glasses...

the problem you described is usual wear and tear but an easy fix your flyback needs to be resoldered and ther is a resistor a 150ohm that is starting to open up that resistor is toward the back to your right next to a plug to provides B+ to your CRT boards

Blue line

good day.
The case you encounter with your unit is just a minor one. Most often caused by loose contacts particularly in the horizontal circuitry. Try to have the circuit be resoldered.

response is highly appreciated.

Won't work

It sounds like something in the high voltage (flyback) circuit failed. If any little thing shorts in these RCA's they will not start up. Stargazer
