Both the heating element and temperature cut-outs need testing and replace if defective.
Thank you.

Gas dryer pilot? or electric starter.

If you can send me the model number that is on the front panel just inside the door I can tell you for sure what kind of ignition it has. If it is newer than 20 years old it is most likely a hot surface or glow bar ignition and does not require lighting.

Whirlpool wgd5300sq0 dryer get hot then cools down. I replaced the thermal fuse as this was the cause the last time this problem was obsereved, however this time the problem has not be resolved. If I shut...

Sounds like the thermal cut-off is kicking in. Try checking the vent to make sure its not blocked and causing it to overheat, this would cause the cool down (the other candidate is a bad fuse, but if you fixed that already I would leave that for last)

Whirlpool mod # WGD5300SQ0 gas dryer gets hot but does not stay hot Is it a thermostat or radiant sensor or something else

by all means when dealing with natural gas consult only trained natural gas does not have an odor..the odor that you smell is an actually additive that has been place for just this reason.
