Usually you grab the uppermost part of the filter that is easily accessible, and pull. Many have a 1/8 turn needed before lifting, but they usually have an arrow marking on them.
Wear gloves - take directly to the sink - be aware any broken glass will end up in there, and cannot easily be seen underwater.
Remove the inner filter also that may still be sitting in the base of the machine.

Pasta and rice should be binned before putting in a dishwasher - causes the most problems ;)

How to clean the food trap

Usually hex head screws on impeller and the spray arm should have a hand screw in center. Loosen hand screw and spray arm comes off then remove screws on impeller and lift it up. Once off I like to clean it with 1/2 cup baking soda dumped into opening then add some vinegar. Reaction will bubble and it loosens any gunk that's there. Reassemble and run dishwasher on quick wash with two cups vinegar added to bottom of dishwasher

Where is food trap located on Jenn-Air ?

Seems like every brand is different but generally speaking, the food trap is located under the main cleaning jet in the bottom of the tub. The part with the nozzles should just pull straight up and allow you to get at the food trap.

I can't locate the filter on my wmd940a to clean it

You are NOT going to like this. To access the debris trap/filter on this machine, you need to tip it on its back. The trap is UNDERNEATH the drum. A rubber hose comes from the drum to a rubber trap bout the suze of a cup, then on to the pump.

The cup device is held in place by a spring clip that you will need to compress with pliers.

Once the trap is off, you will find a hard plastic cup with a ping pong ball inside. Remove the ball, remove the cup, clean out and re-assemble.

ont you love hotpoint for making this so user unfriendly!!

We have a Bosch dishwasher...model #shu4326UC. We have been so happy with it until recently. All of a sudden the dishes are not cleaned properly. We have to run the cycles a couple of times and are...

You likely have food or soap buildup stuck behind the trap in and around the drain workings. The only remedy it to remove the trap cover or lower arm assembly, and start poking around. The food finds its way into the tiniest of places and sits there, but it dirties up the rinse cycle. I have to clean mine out about once per year.

Does not get dishes clean

There is a filter/trap located at the bottom of the machine held in place by 2 1/4 screws. This trap will be located at the lowest point in the dishwasher. Once the two screws are removed there is a lower tub that may have a bit of food debris in it. Sometimes there is food particles that do not get flushed out into the drain. Clean this area and you should be in good shape

It has standing water in it and will not drain or run a new cycle

Mine does this from time to time. If you have your manual, take a look at how to clean out the drain. If not, carefully turn the traps on the bottom, lift out the rectangular screen and the two plastic traps one at a time. Bail out your dishwasher and drain as far as you can, using a spoon, ladle or measuring cup to drain the trap. Once you have done that, there should be a small semi circle of plastic tubing on the bottom left. Pull that out carefully. Reach back and dislodge anything in the plastic rotary piece you can feel behind that with your fingers. Take out any food remants, etc. that might be blocking the drain. Put back to gether and see if it drains. I've had to do this about 8 times over the last 2 years with mine but it always works afterwards. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it continues to work!

My dishwasher stinks!

There is food trap of sorts that's part of the soft food disposer. Problem is that food lays down in all the nooks and crannies and festers.

Try this site on YouTube:

You probably don't need to go to this guy's extremes (but he's thorough!). You probably just need the part about how to clean the strainer and bottom of the washer. I think this'll help. There are other videos, some selling products (that I haven't used). Also some of the videos are helpful, you'll just need to take a look. Once you've cleaned the goo, you can help it clean with just one cup of white vinegar and hot water occasionally. Also, use the least amount of detergent that you can, and still get your dishes clean.

Best regards, --W/D--

Smells fishy

You probably have rotting food scraps in the food trap. Take the bottom arm off, remove the filter, and clean. You can also add some bleach to the bottom of the tank and run the dishwasher empty to sanitize the inside. Run a second empty load to rinse. This should help rid the dishwasher of the nasty smell.
