Question about Craftsman 42 in. Deck 19.5hp Lawn Tractor

3 Answers

I have a 10 year old Craftsman tractor (18.5HP, 6-speed, 42" deck). For several months the right side of the deck will not cut right (leaves the grass much higher - almost uncut). We have checked the usual things (deck is level, spindle is good, newer belt is tight, blades are sharp and on correctly). My guy is stumped. Any ideas? ThanX Rick

You seem to have eliminated all the likely culprits alright, but your description does match the behavior of an upside-down blade.

The engine is running fine and can actually run faster than necessary. This tractor cut perfectly for 3 years and then started doing this for no reason last season.

42 inch mower cuts uneven, what is the problem?

Several things here could be the problem. Check to see if mower deck is level, measure distance on both side on a level surface. Check tire's for low air. If you've replace the mandrel's lately, some have a left & right side & if not put back together properly this will cause uneven cutting

Check the adjustment from the lever to the transaxle, if the linkage is ok the transaxle may be suffering from age and has leaking internal seals.

I have a 19hp craftsman 42 deck. It has two blades. It does not cut the grass in the center. It leaves a strip uncut. What adjustment should I do

You may be running too fast on ground speed for the mower deck to cut completely. It may be time for some new blades. The blades may be worn down to where they are shorter than when they were first put on.

Having trouble replacing a 42 craftsman riding mower belt...help Ithe old one broke off but the new one it on too tight...the replacement one is the right lenght help please

do you remember the routing of the belt? there should be a diagram on the deck somewhere - best thing to do is rout the belt while the deck is lowered, leaving the loop at the front to put around drive pully on bottom of engine. once that is all hooked up, there are deck adjusters on either side of the deck - that you can adjust to relieve some of the tension on the belt - turn the adjusters clockwise to tighten, counterclockwise to loosen - let me know if this helps or if u need more info - i have a 10 year old 42" deck tractor out in my barn and if need be, tomorrow i will walk u through - online how to adjust the deck

One blade on deck gives an uneven cut

Sounds like a bent shaft, or the mounting is not flush.

Loud screech noise from deck area

This can be due to a belt slipping or a bad spindle bearing.
And on the difficulty scale,10 being extremely difficult, The belt would be a 1 or 2 and the spindle about 6 or 7 (because the deck usually needs removed for this job)

It goes on top of the littlie flat idler on the right side,
the right and left side is by sitting on unit.
You will see a little hole in the top of the bolt a little pin goes in there and holds it in place.
