See if it gets listed in Device Manager. You can access this from Start->Control panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager.
If it gets listed with some error tag, try uninstalling & then Scan for new hardware

Cd & g drive quite working

I had the same problem. The fix is a bit unorthadox. I removed the 4 screws holding the circuit board that is mounted directly under the CD player. Now with the board hanging free the unit works fine.
Good luck.

My Cd/dvd drive has quit working.

Hi,

If you are willing to buy a new DVD/CD drive, you can find it easily, only thing is you need someone to get it installed in your laptop.

One question is, whats the exact problem you are facing, please let us know the details, its quite possible that it would be resolved without even buying a new one.
1. Laptop model/CD Model make ?
2. OS/
3. How much old it is?
4. Stopped working after something like shock or just stopped ?

Thanks.

My cd/dvd drive quit working. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the driver through the update but still nothing. Is there anything else I should try?

try deleting the upper and lower filters. These are registry files that help your system manage your cd drive, and sometimes they become corrupt and stop your system from correctly identifying your cd/dvd drive, or inhibit its propper functioning. Follow the steps from microsoft located here to safely complete this task: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 (under advanced troubleshooting)!

Cd/dvd rom not working on hp laptop

Is the Drive detected in the BIOS? Can you boot from your Windows or any bootable disc? If so try this solution:

Always backup your registry before editing and use care to find exact key!
Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.

NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.

My cd player stopped working says I don't have the drive any more

Try this, but note this involves editing the Windows registry and the key must match exactly and be edited only as described. If you are not comfortable with this procedure, then do not do it - ask someone for assistance.

Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.

NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.

My dvd drive in my computer won't play dvds

1. Completely remove any dvd/cd player/burner softwares (i.e. Nero, Power DVD, etc.).
2. Go to device manager and remove your DVD/CD device from the device list
3. Restart you laptop
4. Windows will then try to reinstall the device drivers again for the DVD drive.
5. After another restart, then reinstall your dvd softwares again.

Imac g4 cd drive

It;'s not a great Idea flipping the mac over they have a special stand to put them on when working on them. But it should be able to cope with it. Your mac is relatively old now. With all the moving around it could have just given up the ghost.

They are quite tricky to work on with the hard drive sitting on top and the cables running over and down the side there is a stack of heat generated there. Just make sure you put ll the thermal back in. If it's not a miss seated connection it could be a number of things. Cable, heads. Trouble shooting is quite tricky. As it is a desktop, in a lot of cases it is cheaper to buy an external DVD reader/writer. They are faster now!

You should be able to install OK when it is in terminal mode. You could run disk utility but more than likely you'll have to run the installation again.

Sorry, not much help.

If you delete the information in the Control Panel and restart your computer, it will look for the driver by itself.
