Skype 4.2 crashes with my windows 7 32-bit. Downloaded skype 3.6.0.248 as recommended in the forums. It no longer crashes but the subscriptions don't work. It keeps asking for skype credit even if i am calling Perth, Australia which is included in the subscription.

In such circumstances, you have no need to get depressed, contacting Skype Customer service professionals you can eradicate this problem easily and efficiently. Here are some ways you can also follow up to solve the Skype crashing problems.
Fix #1: Repair Skype Installation
Sometimes, an inaccurate installation of the program can cause Skype to crash. So, follow up the procedure mentioned below to fix the Skype installation issues:
1.Go to the 'Start' menu and then click the 'Search' box.
2.Next, input the 'Control Panel' in the box, and click the 'Apps' icon.
3.From the Results, Choose the 'Control Panel,' and then click the 'More Settings' button.
4.Click on the 'Programs' icon and go to the 'Programs and Features.'
5.Locate the Skype program and right-click on it. Choose the 'Uninstall' option.
6.Click the 'Repair Option.' It will repair the installation file automatically. Fix #2: Re-enable the Skype Add-on in the Browser
While installing the Skype program, its add-on is automatically installed in the web browser. Sometimes, issues with the plug-ins often cause Skype to freeze and crash. Here's how to re-enable the plug-in.
1.Open your web browser and click the 'Menu' option.
2.Choose the 'Tools' option, followed by the 'Extensions.'
3.Locate the Skype icon, and deselect the 'Enabled' checkbox.
4.Re-open your browser program. Again, repeat the same process and go to the Check box for Skype.
5.Next, select the 'Enabled' checkbox. Fix #3: Update Audio/Video Drivers
Sometimes, out-of-date graphic drivers can encounter various issues with Skype. So, update the audio and video drivers of your system with the latest version that you can download from the manufacturer's site. Here, you will find the updated version, choose the compatible one and follow up the instructions to install them. At such time, you can seek the help of either Skype technicians or Microsoft support professionals.
      Fix #4: Optimize Registry
Whenever you reinstall and uninstall a program, Windows registry is up-to-date about it. Although, a registry is interrupted when irregular activities are outdone in the operating system. So, download and install a registry cleaner for Windows 8 that will let you clear out several registry issues on your PC. It will clean the registry of your program automatically.
Fix #5: Install Latest Direct X
If your Skype program is running slowly or often crashing or freezing, then download and install the new version of the Microsoft Direct X to fix the issue and boost up the Skype performance effectively.
Fix #6: Check your Antivirus Software
It's possible that the virus can attack your PC from any open source. Additionally, it critically influences the system performance and slows it down. At such time, your Skype program also gets infected by it. So, install trustworthy security software to scan your computer and detect/remove the threatening programs. Also, ensure that your security program isn't blocking the Skype from working. If it's, then seek the help for it to detect the cause and fix the issue instantly.

I have an operating system Windows 2000 and when I installed e new version of Skype (5.3) the program refuses to start and show next message: Failed to get proc address for SetIdDirectoryW (kernell32.dll)....

System requirements for Skype 5.3
  • PC running Windows® XP, Vista or 7, both 32- and 64-bit operating systems.
  • Internet connection - broadband is best (GPRS is not supported for voice calls).
  • Speakers and microphone - built-in or separate.
  • For voice calls recommend broadband connection with 100 kbps down / 100 kbps up.
  • For group video calling everyone on the call needs Skype 5.0 for Windows or Mac or higher plus webcams, and at least one person needs a group video calling subscription. For best quality we recommend you use a high-speed broadband connection of 4Mbps down / 512kbps up and a computer with a Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz processor. As a minimum you'll need a high-speed broad connection of 512kbps down / 128kbps up and a computer with a 1 GHz processor.
Note :Please consider in Processor, RAM, VGA and harddisk. those the main thing to decide whatever Skype 5.3 for Windows can be installed properly in computer system or not. If one of those minimum requirements can't be achieved by your hardware, please don't even try to install Skype 5.3for Windows.. Leave comment if you have something to ask!!

Dont know what to go to to use the web cam

Can you elaborate on your question? Like what computer are you using and what application you want to use your cam with?........there are an example you can try it.
use web cam for DELL laptop-
Many IM clients allow Webcam support, such as AIM, Y! IM, Windows Live Messenger, and Skype. However, I'd recommend either AIM or Skype since Windows Live and Y! IM are pretty bad (slowed down my Dell; freezes/crashes on start). Plus, you can also use Skype as a phone on your computer. The only downside is that you have to pay a subscription for voicemail ($10/mo.) and it isn't available in all areas.

However, the choice is yours. Make sure you have all your drivers installed (if you can't get the built-in webcam to work, look for a driver on the internet) and test it. It can get really laggy on slow connections and it eats up bandwidth, so watch it. I hope that helps.

Good luck!

I would like some information on skype and how it functions. what features do I need on my PC to be able to use skype?

Skype
Skype is an IP telephony service provider that offers free calling between computers and low-cost calling to regular telephones that aren't connected to the Internet. Included in the free service is a softphone application that can be downloaded to any laptop or desktop computer, or other computing device running Windows, Macintosh, Linux, or Windows Mobile operating systems. A function called SkypeOut enables calls to regular telephones; these calls are charged to a prepaid account or to a flat-fee annual subscription.

You need a microphone and DSL or better Internet service for your computer.
