Question about Briggs & Stratton Briggs Stratton Intek V - Twin Vertical Ohv Engine with Electric Start 22 Hp, 1" X 3 5/32" Shaft, ModelNo. 44K777 - 0027 - E1

1 Answer

I have a Briggs and Stratton 22 hp els 725 vertical v-twin engine on a craftsman gt 5000 50# mower. has worked fine all summer. now starts great. runs great at idle. If I throtle up fast or engage the blades (put it under some kind of a load) the engine bogs down and a dark black, rich smelling smoke comes out of the exaust. If I engage the blades at a lower rpm then ramp up thee rpms the engine sounds fine until I go up a hill then engine bogs again. Help

I replaced both spark plugs prior the previous post. I checked for spark, and both produce spark just fine. When I pull the wire off of one spark plug at a time the engine starts and runs just fine on one cylinder. I am wondering if it could be in the governor.

I have checked that I have spark on both cylinders at the same time. sparks looks good. I took the carb off sprayed carb cleaner in the ports leading to the bowl as suggested. sprayed carb cleaner through the seat and sprayed off the needle. the carb looked clean but i did it any way. the problem does not seem like it is not not getting enough fuel. I put it all back together and am having the same problem. I cut about 4 acres of grass and have two four wheelers. My gas never "sits" for more than a week or two. and my 4 wheelers are not having any problems. the lawn mower runs at high rpms with thee blades running if I slowly ramp up the throtle. It is when I go up a hill it goes in to this phase where the it starts to puff out black smoke and sounds like i am trying to pull a two ton block behind the mower. It will not stop even if I stop moving forward and disengage the blades (take the load off) until I lower the throtle to half. after the mower "regains composure" I can do it all over again. It seems like the engine is flooding itself out to me.

Sounds like you're running on only one cylinder. Black smoke= unburned fuel. You can test by unplugging one sparkplug at a time. If you try to start it with one off and it won't start, try the other one. If one makes no difference, you've found the one that is the trouble. If you find this is the case test spark on both plugs. If you're getting spark on both, then check valves. You may have either a stuck vavle, or the rocker arm might have come loose.
