I have a Garmin Nuvi 200W and have been receiving a message that it needs to be updated. Would I need a special accessory cord to connect to my computer? Also, is there a charge for updates? Thanks in...

That could be an update for maps or software..... software updates are free... new maps are from 50 to 60 dollars..... but do a software update first...if your maps are more that 2 years old i would buy new map

with the unit Off...... connect your gps to your computer using the usb cable..(usb cable is the same connection most cameras use to connect to computers)

your computer will detect new hardware (usb) minimise pop up box

go to register your gps (free) it too will detect your gps model and let you update Firmware and Maps

it will tell you to download WebUpDater utility to transfer files to your gps... Done !

How do I update Have lifetime update Oct. 11 09

You must have your satnav registered with garmin to get the updates. If it's not registered connect it to your computer and go to Select your country from the drop-down list. Click on "Register your garmin device" and follow the prompts. You'll be asked to create a username and password. Keep them safe as you'll need them again when you want to update your maps.

To get the updates go to and log into myGarmin. Click on myMaps. The maps on your satnav will be shown there. Beside the map name there will be a message stating either "No update available" or "Get Update" If it says Get Update connect your satnav to the computer, click on the message and follow the prompts.

After downloading update on garmin site, my nuvi still says"more than one year old need to update". My Dashboard on garmin site say updated successful??

What did you update? The message you are getting refers to the maps. If you have not updated the maps in more than a year, you will continue to get that message. If you update the firmware, voices or anything else, it will NOT stop the message.

How do I update the maps on my garmin i3 streetpilot? is there a free download?

Garmin allows you one free update for your maps as long as you do it within 60 days of your day of purchase. You have to download it with your computer and then use the USB cable that should have come with your receiver to transfer the update to your GPS. After the initial free update the charge is $100.00 per year or $200.00 for lifetime updates.

Update my garmin streetpilot i3

GARMIN offers a free download called "WebUpdater" for these products. Once you have the GARMIN USB driver for this unit installed on your computer (also avail. at, you can run the WebUpdater, and it will update all known updates to the unit.

Installing "new" maps...
If you don't mean "updated" maps, then you would have to use another GARMIN mapping product like MapSource, then load the new maps into the unit via an SD FLASH card.
