Question about Poulan Garden

1 Answer

A year and a half ago my husband bought a Poulin 18" 4.0 electric saw. We used it a few times to cut up trees - no more than 8 in all - then put it away until a few days ago. It threw off the chain twice and the chain had to be tightened after just about every cut. The problem is that no matter how tight you put the chain on while it is on its side, when you hold it upright, the chain hangs below the bar and turning the little bar extension dial does not have any effect. Needless to say, my normally patient husband tossed it into the ivy and went to Home Depot and bought a16 inch WORX chain saw. I can't believe that the poulan is 'junk" as I had done extensive research before we settled on a poulan. What could be the problem and how can it be fixed? I can always give it to out oldest son - but only if it works.

My poulan 18 inch chain saws blade turns but only cuts in about an inch and won't go any farther. It's two days old and worked fine cutting the first 2 trees down.

It sounds like the chain does want sharpening, it depends on what you are cutting ( type of timber, dirty timber, burnt timber etc ) as to how long before it needs sharpening, if the chain comes into contact with the ground below the tree it will lose its edge instantly.

Cs 400, first time cutting great, then the saw did not cut perfectly. Recently it worked poorly. When I push the saw a little bit hard against the log, the saw did not running(the engine is working)

suggest you sharpen the chain, sounds like it's dull like maybe the log you cut had been fallen on ground for awhile, this causes dirt build up in bark and acts just like cutting Dirt and we all know what that does to your chain...dulls it fast ! I learned from experience I cut an oak tree that was cut down for about 2 years when I got permission to cut it up,needless to say it had a lot of dirt in the bark! hope this helps you !

I have the exact same saw. I bought it new 6 months ago also from lowes. It has the exact Same problems you are describing. It does not appear to be oiling the chain enough, the Chain is visibly dry, very hot , and dulls quickly. It uses a half tank of oil to a tank of gas. I am Also in search of an answer.

My saw simply will not pump chain oil. Iv'e run it with the bar and chain off and the pump works.Put it back together and nothing. Before reinstalling the bar I blew the saw clean. I had a Sears Poulin a...

Check that the bar oil ports are clean; there should be a small hole or slot on each side of the bar and these can become pluged with sawdust. Also clean the groove in the bar with a small screwdriver or bar cleaning tool every 8 hrs of operation.

If this does not fix the problem check the oil sump screen in the oil tank(usually on the end of a rubber hose); if no screen in tank: remove oil pump and clean(screen is sometimes in oil pump assembly).

What's the best way to use my 16 in electric saw to cut off tree limbs?

This is somewhat subjective. Eveybody does it a little different. If you are cutting limbs from a tree, start an undercut about where you want the limb to fall free of the tree. Use the upper edge of the chain to cut it about a fourth of the way through. Then start from the top of the limb over where you made the undercut.

2375 ''wild thing'' poulan saw hard starting after carb rebuild

Through trial and error on fairly new Poulin Pro, found that the usual 3-half turns for both high and low was too much (flooded) (Used to be good starting point on weed eaters years ago. So, turned both all the way in, and only backed out 1-full turn. (2-halves) Saw fired up perfectly, and ran wide open just fine. Try that.
