Don't leave the engine running that way - it can be quickly damaged. There is a "governor" that is designed to keep the engine from running too fast. Take off the hood, find the carburetor and look for the throttle lever attached to it. One end of the lever will be attached to a cable that is pulled by your hand throttle. The other end is supposed to have a spring attached and that goes to the governor. If the spring just popped off, put it back and see if that fixes it. If the spring is broken or missing, replace it. If the spring seems OK, look for debris jammed in the mechanism that the spring leads to. If there isn't anything obviously wrong you will need to take it to a mechanic unless you're prepared to do some deeper mechanical work. Good luck! Please rate my solution if helpful, thanks.

Without the engine model number I can't be sure, but if it's an engine that uses an air vane type governor, then you can get overspeeding just from blockage of the airflow over the engine. Take off the fan shroud (remove the screws around the perimeter and set aside any accessories or clamps that are held by the screws). Use compressed air to thoroughly clean the fan blades and down between the engine fins. I hope this resolves it. Good luck!

What is causing the fast Idle and slowing down

well gee, there are 50 reasons.
did you scan the PCM yet, if not ,why not?
when the idle surges, that means.
NO RPM ranges stated, if super low rpm check EGR.

1: engine lean and ISC dead, or cant handle the huge engine power drop..The PCM can even make this worse!, buy hunting the ISC to find spec, idle and failing... to...
2: or any of 50 other things causing huge engine power drop and PCM can't maintain idle controls.
super lean burn.(bogging)
super rich burn, misfire for 50 reasons.

i cant hear your engine, nor feel it, or see it shake from gross misfiring.
no can i drive it and see/feel power loss,
can I?
asking net bunny's this (blind as bats)
is "OVER THE TOP" no?
so here , ill toss the dice for you
and guess gross misfiring.

link even has the 50 cause list, to show the futility of guessing!

for sure.

1993 toyota tercel, idles up and down at a fast constant rate.but runs well otherwise,no engine light on,checked all vaccuum, egr, throttle bod

If it tends to cut off when no gas given but sometimes idles up very fast & then slows back down, probably the idle air control valve. If so, will have to be replaced to fix.

What kind of carb does the 76 c10 4x4 come with need to adjust

mcdevito75 here, The fast idle is needed when the engine is cold to make the air and fuel mixture rich to keep the engine running while cold, the carb. choke doew this with a bi-metalic spring in that balck round box on the side of the carb, a screw also hepls keep the choke closed until warm up, this screw can be adjusted tpo control how tight it holds the choke cloesed, here"s how to adjust this screw to slow fast idle speed, Locate on the carb, where the gas pedal connects, have a friend operate the gas pedal with the engine off, once you locate the linkage, you"ll also see 2 screws with springs around them, 1 is for fast idle the other for regular idle, you want the fast idle screw, notice this screw will lay against and Half moon shaped tab, while the other screw lays against a shaft, you need the screw that lays against the half moon shaped tab. Start the engine and step on the gas pedal slightly and relaease, at the screw that lays against this half moon, simply turn it counter clockwise or toward you just 1 2 or 3 turns very slowly, you'll hear the fast idle come down but you don"t want the fast idle to low, listen to the engine very carefully, slow it down just a bit, it should still race though but not out of control. Of course for a full carb, adjustment the shop should handle that., but this info will help.

Engine idle speed too fast some times. idle speed

Three things to check for:

1) High idle switch is on..*(vehicle thinks AC is running but it isn't.
You can try turning on the AC and see if the engine slows down to confirm this one.

2) Sticking or worn out Idle Air Control or IAC, You might get a check engine light with this one.....you might not if it's a mechanical failure.

3) Simplest of all. A vacuum leak. You can get the engine vacuum read while running if you go to a mechanic with a vacuum guage or an OBD 2 ecu code reader. There should be specs on what vacuum levels are normal for you car at idle.

Good luck and be careful!

Vn800 running fast on tickover

I am not sure what you mean on the "running fast" statement. If idle speed then turn the idle screw outward to slow down the idle.

The backfire is caused by turning off the ignition key when the bike is at high revs. let it idle down THEN turn it off. The backfire is there because the carb idle circuit is active anytime the piston is in motion. Gas goes into the cylinder as the bike revs down then a hot spot in the exhaust pipe finally ignites the built up gas. There is your backfire.

Is the running fast question answered? Give me more information on the problem if it isn't.

Please rate this answer. Thanks njv6!

Poulan chainsaw 46cc 20" chain

You normally have 3 screws - idle speed - slow running and fast running.
First take care as if it runs faster than idle speed that chain will be whipping around also.

Second you have to determine what is the problem. Is it faulty at low speeds or high speeds ? or won't it idle.
If it has turn stops fitted to the screws you only have a small adjustments either way.

If it won't idle, try turning in the idle screw a half turn - until the chain just starts to move slowly.
If its dying at slow speeds, get is going and slow turn the slow screw out until it starts to run a bit rough then turn it back in to the point where its running smoothly.

Bad fast speed can be caused by simple things such as a blocked muffler ( insects too - I had one blocked off by a mudnest wasp) - otherwise get it running at full and adjust the fast screw as per the slow one - out till its rough then back in slowly until its smooth.

Suggest before all this tho that you get it running with the cover off the carby and then give it a good squirt of carby cleaner first - it may just clear out any 'poop' thats there.

(Have faith even tho I have a Poulan with a carb that refuses to run on anything but carby cleaner. I have pulled it apart a few times and renewed all the perishable bits buts its a real pig)

Engine runs too fast

I had to same problem. My engine would idle to fast when stopped. And when I drove, it would accelerate on its own. And if I took my foot off the gas the speed would increase.

My fix was a little piece of plastic called the THROTTLE SENSOR.

But be careful some aftermarkets don't work right and you'll have the same prob. Make sure its manufactured by GM
