Hello,

Can you tell me the signal or error message you are seeing? Can you please do a restart of the TIVO?

Please also provide a small information regarding the setup of your TiVo.

If you're trying to connect you TIVO to your wireless network , you can follow this procedure.

Plug the USB WiFi unit into the USB port on the back of your TiVo.
Using your Tivo remote, go to Messages & Setup, then Settings, then Phone & Network Setup. Select Edit Phone or Network Settings, then select Wireless Settings, then select continue to next step.
You will see a list of available networks. Hopefully, your home network is listed -- select it. If it is not listed, either you have set it up not to broadcast its SSID, your TiVo is out of range, or your network has a problem.
If you have security turned on for your home network, you will now be instructed to enter a password/WEP key. Do so.Make sure you have the correct wireless key for you network.
Select Yes, Connect Via the network to instruct your Tivo to dial-up over the internet rather than the phone line.

If you want to connect your TIVO wired make sure first that you have a router there, then follow this steps from TIVO site.

I have opened all the ports listed on the website. Do you have any other suggestions? I really need this to work.

Can you please provide the brand and model of your router, then also try to do a power cycle on your modem, router and TIVO. To do that power off those devices and wait for a minute then power them back on.

Wired connection of TIVO should work automatically once you done those steps, if its not working fine this is a firmware related issue on your router so better do a firmware upgrade on it.

You already updated the firmware of the router? If you already did that try connecting your TIVO directly to your modem and check if it will work and it did work directly on your modem do a software update on TIVO that should work automatically with your modem.

  • wchadg22 Aug 20, 2010

I did that too and it worked. I did the software update on the tivo as well. Any other suggestions?

Do you have a Tivo Premier and are you experiencing wireless communication...

Recenty, I discovered that devices were dropping off of my wireless network (Netgear N300 wireless N with DSL modem). After trial and error, the solution to the wireless communication problems was to create a wireless N bridge using the Tivo Wireless N adapters.

To use this feature, you will need two Tivo wireless N adapters. One wireless N adapter should be set to bridge and plugged into an available ethernet port into your router. The second adapter should be set to client and plugged into the ethernet port in the back of the Tivo Premier. Once the power has been applied to both wireless adapters and the Wireless adapter (connected to the router) has connected to an available address on your router, press and hold the button (on top of each adapter) to establish a secure wireless connection between both adapters.

Once each adapter has established communication, you will have a separate 5Ghz Wi Fi signal (as well as a channel )dedicated to you Tivo devices throughout the house. Each Tivo Premier added to the house should have the wireless N adapter and connected using the secure connection to the wireless bridge by pressing the button on each adapter (the one on the router as well as the one on the Tivo to install).

If sucessfully installed, you should be able to connect to all Tivos on the network for management as well as streaming. If communication between the Tivos isn't successful, you will have to restart each Tivo and establish a new connection to the Tivo service.

Another suggestion when using the wireless N adapters is to setup a static IP address on each Tivo that is higher than the IP address assigned to the wireless adapter. Each Tivo utilized two IP addresses for each device (one for the adapter and one for the Tivo). You may have to check the router administration screen to determine the IP addresses used for the wireless adapters before establishing a static IP address for the Tivos. If you assign static IP addresses to each Tivo, you will have to restart each Tivo and reconnect them to the Tivo service to establish proper network mapping.

With this wireless network configuration, you will ensure that your Tivos are connected to the service using high speed, dedicated wireless N communication for streaming purposes between the services offered while not impacting other computers, servers, video game machines, and tablets that are connected into your house.

Since the Roamio uses a built in wireless adapter, you may not have success in adding a Roamio to the wireless bridge created on your router unless you disable the built in wireless adapter and purchase the external wireless N model from Tivo.

Instructions on setting up wireless bridge can be found at this location:

Why am i getting a Temporary Service Connection error message?

Did you go into Settings, Phone and Network, Change network settings, and inform the TiVo of the changes, especially to the SSID (which you should not be broadcasting)?

I'm pretty sure the TiVo doesn't need to know the router's password, if you mean the password you have to enter to access your router via a web browser for purposes of changing settings on it, although if you're running any kind of wireless encryption on that router the TiVo will need to know whatever password is associated with that.

And while you're at it, consider giving everything on your home network that doesn't leave the house a fixed IP address that lies outside of your router's DHCP address pool, and making that address pool only a little bit bigger than the number of devices you anticipate needing an IP address assigned via DHCP once you've handed out fixed addresses to everything that doesn't travel.

My tivo HD is not broadcasting or recording in HD

As far as I know, you need the cable cards to get HD through the Tivo, because they're what does the HD decoding and output.

TiVo installation

Since the Series2 doesn't do HD, you don't need any fancy connections, and it's pretty simple to hook up.

1) Disconnect the cable that's connecting your cable box to your TV, from the TV end.
2) Connect the end that *was* connected to your TV, to the "input" on the Tivo.
3) Get another piece of the same cable (coaxial cable), and connect the output of the Tivo to the input on your TV.

That's it.

You may just need to go to Best Buy and get a piece of coaxial cable to connect the Tivo to the TV.

If you need further help, let me know.

It sucks that you can't dial in anymore, but if you have broadband internet there is an easy solution. You can buy for about $20 on Newegg a LiInksys USB200M USB ethernet adapter that allows your Tivo to connect to the Tivo service using your broadband internet. If you modem is in fact dead, this may be the only chance you have at getting Tivo to connect again. I have 2 SD-H400 and I don't (and have never) use the telephone line. I use the broadband connection only and have never had a problem.

Even if you don't have broadband you can get this to work with the USB200M and dial up too. You'll have to connect to your dial up provider using your PC, then set your PC up to use Windows built in "Internet Connection Sharing". You then connect your Tivo to you PC using an ethernet cable. If the cable goes directly from the Tivo to the PC, you'll need a crosswired or crossover ethernet cable. If you have a network switch or network hub in between, you can use a regular network cable. Use your Tivo menus to "Connect to the Tivo Service Now" and it should connect and get any Guide or Software Updates that are available. Keep in mind this will be painfully slow as dial up internet is much slower than broadband.

This problem could also be caused by a recent switch in telephone connection. If you are now using a Voice Over IP (VOIP) telephone, I don't think Tivo will connect with that type of phone line. You're only option then will be the USB200M and some type of network connection to the internet.
