If the diaphragm in the fuel pump gets a small hole in it , it will still run, but **** fuel into the crankcase, the fuel pump is serviceable, and easy to rebuild, a new diaphragm kit is fairly cheap at any local saw shop, just remember to take the model number off of the engine so they can look it up, and sometimes its a good idea to take the pump in with you to match it..

Starts up 20 seconds then cuts out big puffs of smoke

Check your oil level. See if gas got into your crankcase causing the oil level to rise.
If you did not drain last years gas out of the Blower there is a good chance the ethanol gas gummed up the carburetor causing gas to free run thru the Carb, into the cylinder and down into the Crankcase

Will not start. but if I pour gas in carburetor it will. stop after the gas is burn of carburetor

Could be that the needle is stuck in carb, or else the fuel pump diaphragm is bad. Check the pump, thats what I would check first.

The fuel pump works off vacuum pulses off the crankshaft. More than likely the carburetor needs to be removed and cleaned out. This is a common problem with some Briggs engines.

Getting fuel in oil on 19hp b&s motor. Cleaned carb and drained oil, fresh oil and started motor, motor ran for 3 or 4 minutes then had to use a little choke to keep running and then it started...

How long did it take to do this job..did you clean the the carb first...then the oil or vise versa...the reason I as is ma y if these motors are equipped with an electric valve on the carb that go bad or stuck allowing the gas to continue flowing after shut down eventually in the intake valves and into the crankcase...causing smoke and high crankcase pressure and out the carb and exhaust...no use changing it WILL happen again..the fix is simple put an inline gas shut off and shut it off if only shut down for minutes...happened to my 18 horse Briggs...just shut it off every time you turn the engine off..Hope this helps..good luck..

18 hp v twin will not run. It is gettng fuel to carb but will not run. It will run when you spray starter fuel in carb but does not continue to run.

There is a solonoid valve in the carburator that shuts off fuel to meet emissions standards. Be sure it is wired to be powered when key is in run position. You can hear a "click" at the carb. when the solonoid powers up.

Will turn over with plug outbut is very tough to tturn over with plug in.no excess oil or gas in head ,new plug ,lots of oil.float in carb is free .seems not to be hydro locking.is it shot?very few hours...

running out of fuel is a bad thing but will not cause damage. take off the ohv cover. you might have to loosen and prop the petrol tank up to aid in removal. when you have the cover off check the valve assembly and look for cracking on the arms or broken pushrod.

I have a 18 hp briggs and stratton engine that will not start

A few more things to check.
1. The oil level. If the oil level is low the oil level sensor will ground the ignition.
2. Check the wiring from the seat safety switch to make sure it is connected.
3. Follow the black wires from the ignition control module to make sure none of them are chaffing and do not have a chassis ground.

If you still have problems disconnect ONE lead from the oil level sensor and see if you have spark. Most of the time these oil level sensors are the common failure.

Engine appears to run normaly until PTO is egaged, then it backfires and quits. Engine is an 18 HP Vanguard twin, model 350777.

Check you float in the carb I had one a few years back and it was partualy plugged cleaned it out and everthing worked fine. Also is the PTO binding up or bearings going bad putting an excessive load on the motor.

Long rest

OK, this is what the StreerRodders face all the time.

1) Pull all the plugs and get new ones ready.
2) Drain the Oil and replace with 10W-30 with new filter
3) Check the water level in the radiator - make sure up to level
4) Put several ounces of sea-foam down each cylinder
5) Hand crank engine over several times
6) Use starter motor to spin over motor several more times
7) Put Spark Plugs back in.
8) Make sure fuel in fuel tank is drained
9) Add new premium fuel - Use an air hose to clean the fuel line to the engine
10) Pump through new fuel by loosening the fuel line by engine and pumping a bunch through - hook back up tight.
11) Try starting engine -
12) If Carb engine use a bunch of carb cleaner in the carb before starting to clean out most or junk
13) Once engine is started monitor oil pressure and temperatures carefully - run for about 10 minutes
14) Stop
15) Drain Oil - replace filter again - put in new synthetic oil - recommend Amsoil 0-30W
16) Drain radiator and flush out -
17) Reset radiator fluid and top off.
18) check for leaks everywhere
19) Start again and drive carefully for 100 miles and you should be good to go.

Doug
