Good day,
If it is a side by side, it could be behind the grille on the front of the machine, or in the same Box as the thermostat in the upper right side in the rear of the fresh food compartment, or lastly, if it has an ice maker with a plastic tray, it has none. It is an integral part of the ice maker.

Testimonial: "Hey thanks, I was told that it definitely was not in any cooled area yet there it was on the upper right side of the refrigerated area. Thanks again. "

Bad advice. They were moved into cooling areas of the machine to keep out dirt, and extend the life of the timer motor by being allowed to run cooler.

SOURCE: Freezer freezes but fridge does not get cool

DO u have frost build up in the freezer ? If so you have a defrost problem.. defrost thermostat, timmer or heaters. You can by-pass the thermostat cut it and tape the wire together and put it into defrost with the timmer by clicking it to the right until it clicks the heater you need to ohm out .. the defrost timmer will be good most of the time if it comes out of defrost ... ref. will start running again when u test the defrost thermostat here is a diagram that may help

Fridge is not keeping the food cold, water at the bottom of fridge, freezer is not as cold, still freezes things but takes a long time. This is a Kenmore 20 fridge, my guess is 15 years old.

unplug the fridge and leave the doors open for 48 hours, then see if your problem is gone 24 hours later after you plug it back in, if it is, your fridge needs to have a repair to the defrost side of things, most likely the defrost termination therm or the defrost timer, also make sure the drain under the evaporator is not plugged up

Kenmore fridge leaks water on floor and then stops cooling. Tech said it needed heater/defroster and would cost $500. Does this sound right.

Ah no. If the fridge was not defrosting then water would not be leaking out.
It sounds like the defrost timer is not completing it's cycle. You may need a new defrost timer.
The cost of a new timer, call out, fitting and testing could be around $375

Kenmore Coldspot freezer too warm

Hi,

Remove the access panel in the freezer section to expose the evaporator coils. If the coils in the freezer section get plugged up with frost, this frost will block the evaporator fan motor from blowing the cold air around. The fan blade can also hit this frost and either become noisy or stop altogether. Locating the defrost timer can be tricky....they are often hidden behind the back bottom corners of the fridge at the bottom, in the last few years the timers have been located in the ceiling of the fresh food section, and some behind the cold control cover. Once you locate the defrost timer, slowly turn the screw like wheel in the middle of the defrost timer with a straight screwdriver until the fridge shuts off. You are now in defrost. If the defrost heater(s) comes on now, replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. If the heater(s) does not come on, you can ohm test the defrost heater for continuity or volt test for 120 volts to the heater(s). If you have no power to the defrost heater(s) you can also bypass the defrost thermostat to see if the defrost heater will come on, join the 2 wires together to bypass the defrost thermostat. If the heater now comes on, replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. If the heater itself is bad, defrost the fridge with a hair dryer, replace the defrost heater* and defrost thermostat. If the defrost timer seems "hot" to the touch or is noisy ( like a ticking or screeching noise )...replace it.

Hope this helpout......

Fridge is 14 yrs old but in good condition. Several new timers have been installed and the defrost term. unit checks out ok, but the timers will not operate consistently. Model #970-450020.

I would say the new defrost timers are just made too cheaply. The old ones would seem to run for years on end. Maybe whoever installed the timers are just buying the "generic" cheapos?

Either the defrost timer is going out or it could be your defrost bimetal thermostat that is located behind the back wall in your freezer. Both parts are cheap and easy to install. I would replace both.

After you taken the back panel off and see a lot of ice forming on the coil before you use your hairdryer you should locate the timer and turn the center of the timer manually into defrost cycle. If you can see or hear the ice melting then your problem is the timer defective. Change the timer and that is all. But if it doesn't do anything then you will need a little bit more on electrical knowledge to deal with the rest on defrost temperature control and the element itself. Hope this help, God Bless.
