Whenever I set the thermostat say 90 then turn the gas on, the valve seems to open but it does not fire up the heater. Also I smell gas so I turn the gas off and wait 5 minutes and same results. Thanks

Need some help. I rebuilt my old wall heater and it won't turn on. New thermopile, pilot and gas valve. The pilot works, but burner won't ignite. New thermostat too.

turn thermostat to off position check wires from thermopile to stat and gas valve for damage etc . Thermopile has to warm up and make 600 mille volts to work . Try this then open stat and see if it fires up .

How to Change the Gas Valve and Thermostat on a Hot Water Heater

<p>If you are having<b> trouble with the temperatures</b> of your <b>gas hot water heater</b> fluctuating too much, or after <b>changing the thermocouple</b> of your gas <b>hot water heater</b> then you may need to change the complete <b>gas valve and thermostat assembly</b>. Also if you have changed the <b>thermocouple</b> and the pilot still will not stay lit, then the gas valve could be bad or the <b>ECO (Emergency Cutout)</b> may have activated and is open. This is a onetime device and cannot be replaced.<br /> <p><br /> <p>These instructions are for the older style <b>gas valve and thermostat combination</b>. These commonly have a large red knob that adjusts the temperature of the water. Also note that the burner tube nut for <b>natural gas</b> is right hand thread, but if you have <b>LP or propane gas</b> the burner tube nut is left hand thread.<br /> <p><br /> <p>The newer <b>gas valve thermostat combinations</b> that have come out recently are similar, but they have a well in the tank that the sensor slides into. The assembly is held fast with a set screw. With this type of <b>gas valve and thermostat unit </b>the tank does not need to be drained, but most of the rest of the change out is similar.<br /><br />To change a <b>gas hot water heater thermostat</b> you will need to first buy a new gas valve for your <b>hot water heater</b>. The <b>gas valve</b> and the <b>thermostat</b> are integrated into one unit.<br /><br />To <b>replace the thermostat on a gas hot water heater</b> you must follow these procedures....<br /><br />1. Turn off the incoming water and<b> drain the hot water heater</b>.<br /><br />2. Remove the <b>pilot tube</b>, the <b>burner gas tube</b> and the thermocouple from the gas valve. Turn off the <b>gas line</b> and remove from the gas valve.<br /><br />3. Get a <b>pump pliers</b> or a<b> wrench</b> in behind the gas valve and turn the whole assembly CCW to remove it from the tank.<br /><br />4. After applying pipe dope or tape to the new gas valve threads, turn the new gas valve into the tank by turning in a CW direction. Be careful not to damage the small wires to the <b>ECO</b>. They are the little red wires on the back. If you break them the assembly is irreparably damaged.<br /><br />5. Reinstall the gas line, thermocouple, burner tube, and the pilot tube to the gas valve.<br /><br />6. Fill tank with water. Make sure to open a <b>hot water faucet</b> and <b>purge all air from the tank.<br /><br /></b>7. <b>Check for leaks</b> where the gas line hooks up with soapy water.<br /><br />8. Relight pilot light and check operation.<br /><br />9. Set the new temperature setting to a medium setting and then adjust the temperature to your liking from there and adequate time for heating completely<br /> <p>

Outlet water gets so hot it ballooned the PVC pipe like an anuresum. Lights and shuts down, assuming that is a limit switch working properly. Filters cleaned last month/water pressure seems adequate.

Your thermopile that tells the heater how hot the water is has failed. It should kill the heat at a temperature of 104f. This also indicates that the limits are not doing their job, as they should be killing the heat at 135f (low limit) or 150f (high limit). Schedule 40 pvc is rated at about 140f.
This many failures at once is rare, and typically indicates that the heater has been rigged. Get a tech out to fix it correctly. You are literally playing with fire.

Automatic restart is not working. Seems to keep saying eco problem...I thinl...the code is four flashes followed by two flashes.

Gas control valve is not identified, so error code is not known.
ECO means energy cut off.
Energy cut off happens when gas control valve thermostat has gone bad, or when gas control senses runaway heating inside combustion chamber.
Newer heaters have resettable ECO for combustion overheat. This reset is typically located on combustion chamber door and is round and has two wires that connect back to gas control. Generally you have to clean combustion chamber and tubes and catch up on maintenance, then reset ECO, then fire up heater again to see if problem is resolved.

Newer heater does not have reset for bad thermostat, and in that case you replace gas control valve thermostat.
Older heater does not have reset, and combustion chamber and parts are cleaned, and gas control valve thermostat is replaced.
Your manual is best place to start troubleshoot.

We have a gas wall heater product number 4690011 and we do not know how to start it;

Remember if you smell gas, turn unit manual gas valve off and open a near by window, wait until smell is gone then proceed with these directions, turn manual gas valve back on, turn thermostat down.1.) turn combination gas valve knob to the pilot position and press down knob, if unit has a striker button, push striker while holding down knob until pilot lights, keep knob held down in the pilot position for 20 seconds then let up on knob and turn to the on position, turn thermostat up, main burners should light.

Pilot light is lit, but heater will not fire

Make sure thermostat is set higher than water temperature. Make sure pump is running and water is flowing through unit. If gas valve is not opening then flame sensor or gas valve is bad.
