Yes you can. I have that set-up in my house. The only problem is when moisture laden swamp cooled air goes past the heat exchanger. This could cause the exchanger to rust out, allowing carbon monoxide to come into the house when the heater is used. This can be avoidid by having a one way damper made by an HVAC shop, and installing it at the heater.
If you are just running the evaporative cooler any single stage thermostat will suffice. You can buy them at OSH, Home Depot or Lowe's and probably Ace Hardware.
Best way is to get a sheetmetal shop inyour area to make one for you.. Give them the exact size of the opening and then tell them you want a 3/4" flange all the way around and make sure the duct connection is what you need.. Let us know if you need anything else.. please vote.
