Question about Fax Machines

1 Answer

We have an internet modem(connected w/an ethernet cable) that also includes a phone line which also connects to a fax machine. We only have one phone number and we were told if we put our fax on auto answer it would recognize when a fax comes in, but we can't seem to receive faxes. I don't have the setup guide any more and I need to know if I have this setup correctly.

Most fax machines do not operate well on digital lines.
Contact your provider and see what fixes they have for your specific fax machine.
Most fax machines still require an analogue line.

How do I hook up my fax machine with a cable modem connection only

If it is a DSL modem, use a DSL splitter / filter. The fax machine should be connected the tel port.

I cannot send faxes on my HP 700. When I call my fax number it does not ring or answer. The unit is plugged in and the screen has normal information. It does print out sending failures.

Hello,

If your fax does not ring when you call the number then it is not properly connected to the phone line.
Try checking the connections on the fax and to the wall jack; make sure the phone cable is connected to the correct jack on the fax machine.

If this is all good and still no ringing, then you should try another telephone cable or try connecting the fax to another phone jack. The modems and jacks on fax machines rarely break down but if you have tried different wall jacks and different phone cables then you can finally assume that the fax machine is broken.

Thanks,

Pat

Ng poor line condition/ out of memory

Generally this is an indication that the telephone line you are trying to fax over has either alot of noise on it or possibly on the receivers end.If you are on a telephone line which has DSL service on it make sure you have a line filtre connected on the fax to eliminate line noise for your DSL modem, as well if you are using a digital phone service such as Vonage or your Cable providers phone service this is a digital service, contact brother technical support to have your modem speed lowered to 9600bps through the firmware switches on your machine.

I have no dial tone on my fax machine and i cant send or receive faxes

Remove the phone line from the back of the fax and connect a standard phone (not a business PABX or PAX system phone) to the line. Ensure dialtone is available. (Make sure in doing this that you are also testing the cable from the phone socket to the fax). If no dialtone, replace cable or fix line.

Check that the line is connected to the 'line' port on the fax, not the 'phone' port.

If still no dial tone, it may be modem fault (in the fax). Seek specialist attention.

I've changed my internet providers and have gone from a cable internet svc to a dsl phone line provider. Now my computer fax machine says it is offline. Is there a setting that I need to change?

Most likely cause is you don't have a dsl filter on your fax line. Without the filter, your fax machine's modem can't discern between a dsl signal and a telephone signal Since the telephone line coming into the building is now carrying a dsl signal, a filter is necessary to receive/send faxes.

I can't receive and send fax

The splitter the technician is referring to goes on the wall jack. One should have come with the "modem" installation package.
Take a regular telephone cord and plug one end into the splitter and the other into the line jack on the Fax/printer.
When your done you should have two phone cords connected to the splitter - one going to the "modem" and the other to the printer.
