These are common symptoms for all DVD players. Common causes are damaged/dirty discs or dirty laser lens. Also, if the disc is a burned disc, instead of a factory-pressed one, there can be problems. Not all brands and types are created equal. DVD+R vs DVD-R, for example, can make a difference, and so can the manufacturer.

Player has sound of the movie but the screen is just white no picture

There is a small button on top when the screen closes it turns off the display. While the movie is playing press the small button with a small pointing object and see if the display shows something on the screen for a few second and then off (you can sometime see the movie playing but very dim). then there is a problem with the switch not switching the display back to normal. Hope this helps...

DVD screen is black

First check to see if there is a switch near the A/V jacks and ensure it isn't set to "in". If it is, your player is looking for an external source... Otherwise, if you mean you play a disc and get picture but no sound, then yes, the flourescet tube circuit is bad. There are no replacement parts available for that unit.
