There is another little switch like slide near the side of the laptop towards the end of the battery compartment. This a lock for the battery latch. Slide the switch to unlocked position and then try releasing the battery again. When you put the battery back or a new battery in , be sure to slide the switch to the locked position. This is just an extra feature to make sure you're battery won't fall out. If this solved your problem PLEASE rate this as fixed. If not do not rate yet just add a comment letting me know what happened and I'll be glad to assist you further. Thanks and have a nice day.

Removal of front bezel on gateway 4850-45

Gateway do not appear to provide any service or repair documentation on their support web site other than a generic user guide which could apply to any of their computer systems.

Typically to remove the front bezel you would need to remove both side panels if the case design allows for this - this should be done with all power disconnected and all devices such as monitor, keyboard etc disconnected too.

Once the case is open, look inside the front of the case and see if you can see a number of release latches on both sides - these are normally of the type that expand themselves when the bezel is pressed home. You should expect there to be between 3 or 4 latches on each side depending on the size of the bezel.

Press on the release latches and attempt to gently pull the bezel away - you may need someone to help with this as the latches will re-engage if you remove pressure from them. You can insert a screwdriver blade in the gap between the bezel and the casing if it helps.

If you can release all the latches on one side of the case, then you should be able to more easily free those on the other side.

When pulling the bezel away, be aware of any optical drives (CD, DVD or front mounted USB / smart card readers) that may insert into the bezel - do not use excessive force.

How to remove the harddrive

Make sure your power is off. Then remove the side panel. The front cover will need to come off. Inside at the bottom there will be 4 tabs sticking just inside the cage, release these tabs. Then in the inside top right corner is a green push in button this will release the top of the cover. Once your front cover is off unplug your cables then lift the lock latch and the drive will slide out the front.

I happened to find a PDF on compaq's support site: if you use Ctrl+F in your web browser and put in DC5100MT it will take you down to the right place. Simply open this PDF if your favorite viewer and there's a whole series of images explaining how to take the panel off (page 4).

Open the cover to apply more memory to compaq pavilion a6511

last 6500-series Pavilion I had on the bench here had 2 screws and a plastic latch on the side cover on the back of the machine- I think the latch pushed down to release, but the cover was still very tight, you might need to pry the cover 1/4-in. back w/ a screwdriver once released to clear the interlocks

Battry

there is a round shiny cylinder battery on the motherboard, usually (but not always) on the bottom right. It is probably a model 2032 battery. You will need to get a new one and replace it.
