How do I take out a 5/8 auger bit that is stuck in a railroad tie? The drill won't move it ahead or in reverse.

Hey Doreen,
First, remove the stuck drill bit from the drill... You can drill "relief" holes around the stuck drill bit in a circle (use a 3/8" bit) and drill about 6-8 holes deep and close to the stuck bit.. this will relieve the tension on it and you should be able to wiggle the stuck bit carefully (don't break it) until it pulls out.

I am trying to drill through old encyclopedias, but the drill bits keep snapping in the pages. What type of drill bit can I put on an hand-held drill that will get through the books without breaking?

rx-dk-diy054036_wood-drill-bits_s4x3_lg.jpgI've used 'regular' high speed drill bits for paper, and wood boring bits. I think the wood bits work better, but whatever bit is used the drill flutes have to be cleared out of material. This is done by drilling a little bit at a time and then lifting the drill out of the hole to clear the hole and the drill of shavings. This is essential to do to minimize heat buildup and binding of the drill bit. The drill bit should not break if you take it nice and easy, and drill in small increments .

Drill overheat

Soap might work. Some use candle wax, bees wax, WD 40. I've prayed silicone on the drill bit. Using moderate pressure and low speed definitely helps, and it is essential to clear out the hole of chips frequently. So drilling in increments works. You drill a little, lift the bit up out of the hole to clear the chips. Also the type of bit used is a factor in drilling efficiency: wood boring bits are a good choice. Forstner bits are excellent, and spade bits are just OK. Hope this helps....

How do i use a spade bit?

I'm assuming you mean a spade drill bit?

For best results, try clamping a block of hardwood to the back side of the stock before drilling. When the bit approaches the end of the cut, it will be far less likely to blow through with another piece of wood to drill. However, if the stock placed on the back side is softer than the workpiece, or if it is not securely clamped to the workpiece, tear out can still occur.

To use a spade drill bit, mark the center point of the hole to be drilled on the wood, and install the shank of the bit into the drill. Align the point of the pilot tip of the spade drill bit with the mark on the wood, and adjust the angle of the handheld drill so that the shank of the bit is square to the surface of the wood. (Of course, if you're using a drill press, the bit's angle should already be square to the surface of the wood, unless your drill table is not square to the motor).

Depress the trigger of your drill slightly to engage the motor and turn the bit slowly. Hold the drill as still as possible so that the pilot point stays aligned with the mark on the wood. Because pilot tips can often "walk" away from the intended center point of the hole, some woodworkers will pre-drill the pilot hole using a small-diameter twist drill bit that is less likely to walk, and then proceed with the spade drill bit's pilot tip into the pre-drilled pilot hole.

Once the pilot tip is in place and engaged with the wood, increase the speed and proceed to drill the large diameter hole with the spade drill bit. Continue drilling until you reach the opposite side of the wood and the bit pokes out through the completed hole. Slow the speed of the motor, and pull the drill bit out of the completed hole.

Try to keep your drill straight and try a bit harder - looks like you were drilling something very heavy.

Ryobi impact drill compatibility with normal drill bits

Round bits are not compatible with the Ryobi impact drivers. You need the hex shank "quick connect" bits and accessories. There is an adapter available. it is basically a regular style of keyless drill chuck with the quick connect hex shank that should fit right in to your Impact.

The drill bit came out of my xrp 12v dewalt drill. How do I get it back in? Is it locked?

I hope I am understanding your question properly, if not, leave a comment. This drill *** a "keyless" chuck. If you look down into where the drill bit goes, there are metal pieces inside the black nose of the tool. Those metal parts are what holds the bit into place. The drill bit slides into the hole at the front of the drill (where it fell out from), Put the drill bit back in and then grasp the black tip (right below where you put the drill bit in). Directly underneath where you put your first hand, hold onto the piece directly below the upper part. Turn the top piece right and left and it tightens or loosens the mechanism that holds the bit in place. Give it a firm turn to make sure it is tight.
