Hi Barbara
The first think you want to try is unplugging your drive from the computer and then plug it back in.See if Windows picks up the new hardware and starts the service automatically.
Also,and I mean no offense,make sure the AC Adapter is plugged in.Things are kicked loose accidently quite a bit.
If those don't work go to Start-Programs-All Programs and look for a Western Digital folder.There should be a control program in there that you can start manually.
Post any questions you have,I'll help with what I can.And if this fixes the problem,would you please rate my post?
Let me know what happens.
Bob

When i start my laptop, its always shows a message that WDDM service is not working.

You need to set the WDDM service automatic.
please follow the below steps to set the service Automatic.

Click on Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> services
Or
Start -> Run and type in Services.msc and perss enter

Find the WDDM service on the Services window. then right click Properties go to general tab select startup type set it to AUTOMATIC then apply and restart the services.

Please check the status after restarting. Please let me know this resolve the issue you are facing, if not i can assist you further.

I have a Western Digital Passport Essential 320GB to back up my PC. Now, I don't know why, the file wdsmartware.exe doesn't run and appears the message "WDDM service no running". Can you help me...

You must restart the WDDM Service. To do this you must be logged in as an administrator:

1. Press the Win Key (between left "ctrl" and "alt) + "R". That will open the Run Dialogue Box.

2. Type "services.msc"

3. Scroll down to WDDM

4. Right click ----> Properties

5. Verify startup type is "Automatic"

6. Click "Start" ---> "Apply ----> "OK"

At start up I keep getting this annoying error " WDDM Service Not Running." How do I turn that off? And, no I do not have the WD Passport hooked up all the time. Thanks, Kim

this is a Western Digital message. Best bet is to uninstall WD stuff and reinstall. It occurs because you don't have it hooked up. You can also go to START; MSCONFIG; and turn it off there. Look for WD programs and un check them.
If this answers your question, I'd appreciate 4 thumbs. I do this for fun and do not get paid.

WDDM service not running. It's only happening to my new computer, my old one opens the 1 Tb hard drive just fine. What gives?

Im guessing since you didnt clarify that your NEW computer is running Windows 7 and the old one is running XP or an early version of Vista. The WDDM service software is picky with windows 7. You should download DirectX 11 and update the wddm drivers to 1.1 from the microsoft website.

Computer tells me "WDDM service not running"

If you want to back up files on to your external hard drive, you don't need the wddm program. Microsoft Windows usualy comes with a back up program. just open up the windows help and search for back up. and open the back up your files option and then click the link that says click to open backup and restore center. Follow the on screen instrucions and save the files to your external drive. I have an external drive, and I recomend that you do not back up yor files. This is only usefull for saved games. backing up music and movies takes to long. What I do is move all of my music and video files over to the external drive and I can acess them drictly from the drive itself. you can't do that if you back the files up, the files end up being commpressed into a zip file of some sort that says backup drive. when I installed my external drive, it was given a drive letter. I open up my computer and itsays My Book - with drive letter G. I click on it like it is a regular drive and I can save stuff to it. I save my videos to this drive and can watch them at any time. If you want to back up files I recomend unchecking the back up music and video options and saving music and vide files in the manor that I mentioned earlier. Then back up all other files and it will get done much quicker as these files usually are not near as big as music and video files are. So you can ignore the error message and be carefull not to download any updates for these drives. I did this and the drive came up with an error message that told me that my new drive was defective and needed to be replaced. I was angry so I took it back to the store, and replaced the broken drive for the same one. I will never again install any updates for my external hard drive. the error message said something about having no drivers, but the help info for the drive said that the drivers are automatically installed for all windows opperating machines. once again I urge all people with the western digital My Book essential and simmilar drives - stay away from those bad update files!
