That would be a broken compression ring that goes around the piston and keeps the oil in the crankcase...
That will mean a major engine overhall for you...

Gasoline runs through carb and out muffler

The needle valve isn't seating and sealing off the flow of fuel, you also need to check your oil to make sure it doesn't have fuel mixed in with the oil, it can ruin your engine, quick fix install an inline fuel shut off valve and turn it off when you shut the engine off, and this will fix the problem.

Last week, I added some SAE 30 oil to my self-propelled recycler, electric starter. This week, it spewed blue smoke out the front of the machine. What's wrong, and what do I do?

If you lifted the mower to check underneath you might have gotten a little oil in the wrong place. Remember if you lift a mower to like sharpen your blade always lift on the side of the air filter. Air filter up and you will not get that problem, as long as it does not continue to smoke it should just burn out. Make sure that 30W is correct oil for that model. Good Luck...

I had turned the mower onto its side to clean the deck. When I uprighted the mower, it would start and then flood out spewing black smoke from the exhaust.

You didn't hurt anything. They sometimes do this when turned on there side. They especially do this if it is an older motor. Oil gets buy the piston rings and then burns off when you fire it back up. Just don't store it on it's side. Always store it on it's wheels. Try turning up on it's nose when you rinse the deck. That's what I do with mine and it doesn't smoke.

I changed the oil and white smoke poured out of the exhaust. Also there was oil spewing all over.

Depending on if you laid the engine over on its' side, there could have been oil in the muffler. It may take some time to "burn" this off. It will also come from the muffler. Given enough time the oil will get hot and smoke off of the muffler. Then it will no longer smoke.
I hope this answers your question.

you could have a broken piston ring. check the oil level. if it is ok or low and still smokes or hard to start then you may have to overhaul the engine. let me know what you find.

It wouldn't let me pull to start

Check your oil level. If overfull, find the oil drain plug and lower the level to the "full" mark on your dip stick (built onto the oil cap). If you can't find the oil drain, I'm sure you can improvize. My wife never pays attention to this and just adds a quart... ha... but really, it's important.
Hope this helps... Good luck!

Lawnmower is spewing white smoke

white smoke means that there is water in the fuel air mixture during combustion. a bluish white smoke means oil is being burned during combustion. take another look and make sure which one it is. since all mowers ive seen are air cooled the only way water can be getting in the fuel air mixture is through the gas cap. check your gas tank and gas can for water. may be best to empty both and start over with fresh fuel

Constant white smoke while running

White smoke is oil burn off. First off, check the oil level (sounds dumb, I know) and make sure the oil is not overfilled. Overfilling would be the easiest solution. If there is oil burning onto the spark plug but the oil is not overfilled, I would think rings... possibly scarring in the cylinder. Something allowing the oil to seep past the piston into the head. If the cylinder is scarred, there are .020 oversized pistons and rings available for the engines, rebore the cylinder and place those in.
