Question about PC Desktops
If you have not setup you're mic settings you will not be able to use the mic. How to setup & test you're mic.
Click the start button once, slide up to & click control panel. Once opened, find & double left click on Sounds and audio devices. It will open. Click the Voice tab. (Something like Realtek should be shown under default device. Click test hardware. Follow the onscreen instructions. When finished you should have a working mic.
If not, post back here so I can include more troubleshooting.

test all power and data leads that attach to your hard drive IDE SATA
MOTHERBOARD TO THE HARD DRIVE make sure they have secure dust free connections and are not faulty if its a flat ribbon 40pin ide
this will be the first to fail
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure dust free connections
a computer needs power and data to travel through every working device and continue its cycle and have a finishing point so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error
make sure the CPU has a secure dust free seating with thermal paste
make sure your ram modules are securely seated with no dust in the sockets also the Cmos battery has charge with no dust in the socket
on some motherboards cmos batteries are soldered in
