It sounds like you have a bad element, you can test them if you have an electrical meter. Turn the breaker off to the water heater take the access cover off for each element and disconnect the wires to each element, then put your meter to check for continuity and put one electrode on each screw if it beeps they are good

I'M NOT GETTING HOT WATER THE SYSTEM HAS POWER IS THERE A RESET BUTTON OR OL SWITCH ON A RHEEM TALL ELEC UNIT

There is a reset button located behind the top cover plate on the side. Remove four screws to remove cover and carefully spread insulation apart to access element, thermostat, and reset button. It is a small round red button. If you push it in and it stays thens the element should come on. If it pops right back out then you need to look at changing the reset.Thank you.

I no hot water coming out. Have power to water heater.

Electric water heater is not making hot water.

That gives 4 suspects.

1) Breaker is not delivering 240V to water heater on both legs.
Open following link for checklist troubleshoot.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Test-electricity-to-water-heater.html

2) Upper thermostat ECO reset button has tripped. Open top cover and push in reset button. Put insulation and cover back so thermostat not exposed to cooler air. If problem persists, replace both thermostats.

3) Upper element is bad. If upper element goes bad, the tank will not have any hot water, even if lower element is good.

My water is not heating in my Rheem 40 gallon electric. I pushed the reset button, but when I turn off the breaker and then on again, I do not hear the elements heating up.

Electric water heater can be repaired by homeowner
If I understand correctly, water heater is producing no hot water.
Reset button clicks in, but still no heat.

Three initial things can be causing this:
1) No power to water heater. Test across top two screws on upper thermostat for 240V. Red and black wire are attached to these screws. Screws are marked 1 and 3. Upper thermostat is same that has reset button. If power tests 120 across screws, then breaker may be off on one leg. If no power, then start testing at breaker.

2) Upper thermostat is bad. Replace thermostat with generic upper thermostat available at hardware store.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermostat-on-electric-water-heater.html

3) Upper element is bad. Test and replace element using Rheem 4500 watt element available at hardware store. Image shown below. Look at label on side of tank for element wattage. Rheem puts 4500 watt elements into all their 240V electric water heaters.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-test-water-heater-element.html

If upper element is burned out the tank will not heat any water.

Upper thermostats are generic and interchangeable:

Installed new rheem 40 gal elec water heater. model ge40m06aag. no hot y already checked breaker and am getting. 240v to the wh

did you turn the power on BEFORE you filled it with water???

this is a pretty common mistake. you will need to check the upper element to make sure its working.
most water heaters have an upper and lower themostat. the upper thermostat is the one we need to check.

use your volt meter...

turn the power off, test with your volt meter to make sure! remove one wire from the element, not the thermostat, and check resistance on the element. if no resistance, you burned the element, and will need to replace it.
replace with same wattage, usually 4500watts. it will be written on the element.
also, I like to push the reset button on the thermostat to make sure it wasn't tripped.

Remove power from WH Remove heating element covers and, insullation you will see two screws and, a red button (reset) for each element; push the button for each element to reset them; put everything back repower and, test. If the problem is still there: Remove power, test element screws with a meter set for resistance; if no continuity drain WH and, replace element(s)

Water heater not working

Hi,
Check the top thermostat... right above it is a red button that you will have push hard on to reset...
If all that checks out then you have a bad top element...replace that...

Water heater not heating water.

Hi, W/D here.
You'll need an electrical test meter to find what ails ya. The reset button was a good idea, and it may help. If not:
1. Disconnect the power to the water heater (Trip the breaker to "Off").
2. Check the electrodes where they screw into the tank. There are two terminals. Test for continuity. If either electrode tests open, replace it.
3. With power on the heater, test for power through each thermostat to the electrode and back. Replace any defective thermostats.
Hope that this helps you, --W/D--
