I had the same problem with a brother. Mine was a connection issue, the dealer told me to take a pencil eraser and erase the end of the foot control that is inserted into the machine. Make sure that you wipe it down very well after that then insert it into the machine. That was all mine took and now it runs again. Good Luck

My sewing machine goes by it self when I unplug the foot peddle it stops

What make and model machine is this please?

If its an Elna Air electronic with the pneumatic foot control then check that the air hose line isn't squished under your chair leg.

If its an electric foot control for another sort of machine, then I'd guess that something has gone inside the foot control.

You may well find a replacement one on or

Availability of foot control for Pfaff 1471 sewing machine - I think the electric connection plug to the machine needs re-welding. This has happened before and was fixed by having the connection...

Yes your dealer should be able to get you a new one or rebuild your old. $130 for new $ 50-75 to rebluild I would est. You did not tell what the problem with your machine is. I get people in all the time that think they have a bad foot control but it is motor brushes or bad baseplate. Take in your machine and let them put a different foot on it and test. If you have a bad foot control you will know with that test.
I can help more if you give more info.

I have a 40 year old Brother machine. It now runs

Yes, it is the capacitor, or the condenser as you call it has comletely short-circuited electrically bypassing the rheostat, which causes the motor to run at full speed. The cure is simple...cut it out of the circuit. On Singer machines the culprit is usually located inside the foot pedal box...probably on your Brother machine also. They were meant to supress noise from entering into your power line, which causes interference when listening to AM broadcasts, which everyone at the time did. The capacitors themselves will either be in one or two round cans or square flat cans. Simply snip the wires to the capacitor(s) inside the foot controller box and your machine will once again work like normal!

The foot control is not working

well particular on electrical problem foot control is a switch of motor that deliver speed varies on how you press the foot pedal it consist of circular thick plate carbon the old model and the new one electronically control of power ic,It depend on how this pedal was contro.Anyway besure the power is off or unplug the machine; this control was been connected in series connection to the motor which you can test if your foot pedal control is defective. Disconnect the line wire holding foot pedal from the terminal inside motor assembly. If your not qualified electrician don.t do this.Connect the two terminal wire that inside the machine where the motor mounted. This connection is supplying your motor in full speed,Declucth your machine from the handwheel so that the motor run only.Plug the machine and switcn but you must jug only if the motor run in couple second of course without the foot control this was disconnected already. So your foot control is defective vice versa if motor does not run without foot control motor is busted.
how to fix if foot contol is defective, in carbon type you must replcace the circular thick carbon. On Electronic control check the IC if this open or some capacitor and resistor are open,Replaced any pars that had been short circuited. If the motor is defective replaced the carbon brush mounted at two side of motor case,There is an opening port. The carbon brush has spring holding push this carbon brush to the brush armature of rotor.

Hello, I hav no idea of what type of machine you are using but, I have two older Kenmore mechanical sewing machines and a very old Dressmaker and have fixed the same problem with mine.

If you gently remove the outer metal housing on your pressure foot control, (unplug it from both the outlet and the machine) there is a black metal coil like thing with two longer end pieces. They respond to your foot pressure, tranferring that pressure to a series of parts and copper to complete the electrical connection needed to run your machine.

Look and see if there is any rust around that black coil piece. If this is the problem, your pressure foot is getting caught and frozen in the "on" position and unable to dis-engage to stop the electrical connection to your sewing machine.

Clean any rust, (emery or steel wool works for me) check your wire connections, dry it completely and replace the foot petal housing. It may take a little tinkering but this will work if this is the problem. Best Wishes.

Speed does not stay constant

Hi, Chances are good that you need to have your foot controller repaired. The electrical contacts inside the foot control can either get dirty/dusty or worn out.
If it is not an electrical problem, like your foot control ( and I think it is) then it is a mechanical problem inside your machine. If it is mechanical and your machine is "binding up" , when it slows you would find it hard to turn the hand wheel located on the end of your 180. One other possibility is that the brushes in your machines motor are worn out and you need to have the motor replaced.
All three problems would require professional help as there are not any user serviceable parts on your machine. A good cleaning and servicing at a Bernina dealer should get you back on track.
Good luck, bushvideo
