If the ribbon is still in good shape and there's no damage with it, you can re-fit it. The main problem is you must take apart the machine to reconnect it. If it's damaged or broken, you'll need another replacement which will be obtainable from HP retailer.
This ribbon regulates the movement and alignment of the cartridges, if it's loose or absent, the cartridges will move randomly and as if there's no control since the carriage will keep carrying instead of proper movement. Moreover, the printouts will come out as anything with whatever the print-heads could touch on the paper which means, zigzag or fuzzy or anything like that.
If you know how to take it apart, you can try, otherwise, I don't recommend "Do it Yourself", you may cause another damage instead of fixing.

Once it's opened apart, there's a hook like joints where one end will fit and the length will stretch toward the other end and fit it with the ring (circle).

I wish you good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

My son pulled a strip of plastic out of our printer and I was curious if you can tell me where it came from and if it can be fixed. Its a strip about a foot long and it has a cross(+) and black circle at...

It's what you call the encoder strip. Try printing something, if it works then great. But basically if that strip is gone most likely you won't be able to print anything anymore.
Since your printer is a PSC 1350, for sure it is already out of warranty. And Believe me, there's no use going through troubleshooting for this one. Call HP and just Upgrade your printer. HP Printer Tech Support would be more than happy in giving you discounts, you can actually get a brand new printer half the price that you will see on the website plus you can also get an extra year of warranty just by adding $1.00 to the total price of the printer.

The runner in the printer

The encoder strip is most likely the problem. Unplug the power from the printer. Open the front cover and move the cartridge carrier to the center. You should see a white ribbon cable, a thin plastic strip and a black belt with teeth.
The thin plastic strip is the encoder strip. It rides in a sensor on the back of the cartridge carrier that you will not be able to see. Reach in with the first finger of either hand and carefully strum the strip as if playing a guitar.
The strip will need to be lowered slightly and brought towards you slightly. Please be careful not to break the strip or your printer will not function. Once you believe the strip is set correctly, plug the power back and try printing the self test. If it slams to the left again, the strip is not yet set correctly.
If you cannot repair the strip, please let us know so that we can assist you further.
Please Note: Fixing the encoder strip is a delicate procedure. During the troubleshooting, if the strip breaks, you will not be able to use the printer.

See if there is a break in the ribbon cable.Place a light behind the ' ribbon ' so that you can see the the wires in the tape. If you see a break in the wire inside the ' ribbon ', you will have to ' jump ' the break with a wire soldered to each side of the break. You must strip ( vary carefully ) the plastic on EACH SIDE OF THE BREAK to reach the metel conduct. If you can, strip the plastic or melt it over the break and ' dap ' it with solder to reconnect the break.
Be careful because the ribbon with the electrical cable inside is very thin and fragil

Everex nc1500 HELP!!

Usually there is no need to dismantle the laptop to get at the keyboard.
Usually there may be a plastic strip above the keyboard and the LCD screen. The plastic strip above the keyboard may be secured by a screw on the back edge of the laptop with a screw located behind the screen hinge. If there are no screws then it is just clipped in place, slide a thin blade under the plastic cover that covers the screen hinge and gently level up until the it pop up, there may be a ribbon cable connecting the switches and LEDs.
Depending up on the model of the laptop, the keyboard may have screws that is located under the plastic strip or it may have screws that are located on the bottom of the laptop, usually 3 or more screws directly under the keyboard. Once the screws are removed the keyboard can be removed, be careful the is a ribbon cable that attaches the keyboard to the motherboard.
The end of the ribbon cable may have a connector attached to it, pull the tab to release the connector. OR it is just a ribbon cable alone and it fits into a connector, to release the cable pull the plastic catch up to release the cable.

Plastic strip fell out

Perhaps this is the printhead assembly position "tape." On looking at this tape, are there tiny vetical lines on it? If so, then this is how the printer detects head position, as a sensor & associated circuitry counts how many lines the head has moved. It may attach at one end to a fixed hook, & with a spring like hook at the other end. It will have to be routed through the noted sensor also. This might be tricky if you don't possess some technical skills.

EM 500 RIBON CABLE TORE how to replace?? HELP!!

It might be possible to repair the tear. You'd need to bond a plastic backing to the back of the ribbon to support it. Clean off the front layer to expose the torn conductor ends then paint a thin strip of conductive epoxy or car heater matrix repair along each of the flat wires. Finish off by covering (when set) with scotch tape. Everything needs to be completely squeaky clean (use alcohol) before you start.
