Question about Kenmore 74262 / 74264 / 74269 Top Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

I want to turn the refrigerator off so that I can clean it. I do not want the refrigerato to run while I remove the items and wipe down the box. The temperature dial does not have an off setting. I have the same question for the freezer...where is the off setting. If you must post on facebook do not provide any info that can be connected to me.

Hi,
The best thing would be to simply unplug the fridge...but you also can just turn the dials all the way down... in will still shut it down for a bit...

You need to remove everything from the machine - turn it off, clean all the trays, shelves, etc. Completely wipe down the inside of the machine with warm soapy water to remove residue, and then wipe down again with vinegar and water. Once this is done, open up a box of baking soda and put one in the freezer and one in the refrigerator section. Turn on the machine, It may take a few weeks to get the smell out - especially if the smell has gotten into the insulation around the box. Good Luck!

How To Clean Stainless Steel Appliances

First do a quick wipe of the appliance with a gentle liquid dish detergent & water mix, dry with a clean towel. After washing you’ll likely see the smudges and marks still hanging in there. You can buff out each smudge with a lint-free towel and some pressure, but try one of these items instead to bring back the shine and quickly remove those pesky fingerprints and smudges:
  • Olive Oil (just a dab will do)
  • Mineral Oil (Baby Oil)–Just a dab will do
  • Club Soda (especially good for removing streaks and heat stains)
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Vinegar (great for polishing too)
Apply directly to a lint-free cloth and wipe down surface, follow up with a clean dry cloth to bring appliance to a mark-free shine.
  • Avoid using cleaners or cleaning tools that are abrasive since they can mar the surface (even some soft-scrubbing creams can cause damage).
  • When cleaning the surface, wipe down the appliances along the grain of the stainless steel for best results.
  • Don’t clean stainless steel with bleach (diluted or otherwise), this can damage the finish.
  • Don’t forget to open the refrigerator or oven door, you’ll likely see a mess of smudges along the edge of the door.

What is causing an odd smell in the refrigerator side of our side by side?

Due to open storage of Vegitables & NonVeg items produces gasses in refrigirator this will attracts the water and to other food products and may give bad smell. For this aspossible place them in plastic bags / in airtight containers. To reduse the smell in the refrigirator follow these guidelines.
6 Easy Tips:
Keeping your refrigerator in tip top shape and those odors at bay has never been so easy. The first thing I usually do after detecting an odd odor is to remove all the left over food that may be stored. Even if some of the food was just put in for keeping, it may also have absorbed some of the odor itself. And I don't think I'd want to keep it if it is. So the best way to start is by making sure all leftover food is cleared out. And then follow up with the 6 easy steps below for keeping your refrigerator smelling fresh and clean.
1. On a monthly basis, wipe the insides of your refrigerator out with a solution of white vinegar and water. It is said to work best if you heat the solution up in the microwave for approximately 45 seconds. Be extra careful when dealing with any heated liquids to avoid burns.
2. As an alternative to vinegar and water, you may also try wiping the insides of your refrigerator out with a mixture of half chlorine and half water. This method has also been proven to cut down on any mold you may see from time to time around the rubber seal of the refrigerator doors.
3. Ok, this next tip may sound very odd. But it is said to be really a tough smell catcher. Take a bowl and fill it with cat litter. Any kind will work except the clay kind. Place the bowl in your refrigerator and shut the door. After about three days, your refrigerator should be back to smelling nice and clean.
4. Charcoal is another great unexpected item you can use to absorb those fowl smells. Place a few chunks on a paper towel or cloth and place it in the back of your refrigerator. And within 24 hours you should be able to detect a huge difference.
5. Another very inexpensive idea is to place a cotton ball saturated with vanilla extract inside your refrigerator. Place a couple around if the bad smell is very noticeable. And apply more extract as need.
6. And my last tip is a very well known method. It is placing a box of opened baking soda (found at any local supermarket for around $.59) in the back of your refrigerator on the bottom shelf. It will also absorb foul odors and give your refrigerator a fresh clean smell. You can replace the box when needed, which will probably be about every 3 months.

Thanks & Regards

Bad Smell in Fridge

To remove odors:
1. Remove all items from refrigerator or freezer. Throw
out any spoiled foods. Take out removable parts and wash
them and door gasket with mild detergent in warm water.
Rinse well and wipe dry.

2. Wash interior walls and door liner with solution of 1-2
tablespoonsful of baking soda to 1 quart warm water, and
wipe dry. Leave door open and let it air out well, with a
fan directed toward inside, and opened windows if climate
permits.

3. If odor still remains, try one or all of the following
means of odor removal.

a. Spread baking soda out on shallow pans (like shallow
glass casseroles, pie plates, or jelly roll pans lined
with foil) and put pans on shelves to absorb odors, or on
the bottom and in baskets of chest freezer. Leave open
and unplugged.

b. Buy activated charcoal (which is specially treated to
remove odor molecules from air) at some department store
housewares sections, appliance store, or pet shop. Spread
out on shallow pans and put on shelves of refrigerator.
Turn refrigerator on low setting and run empty a few days
so odors will be absorbed.

c. Spread cat litter in shallow pan in cabinet, turn on
and run empty a few days. If odor is disappearing but is
not all gone, replace old litter with fresh litter.

d. Pour several ounces imitation vanilla (not pure
extract) in a shallow saucer, put on shelf and let run
empty a few days.

e. Put fresh ground coffee in cereal bowls inside the
refrigerator and let run empty several days. A slight
coffee odor may remain, but will disappear after washing
again with baking soda solution.

f. Pack each refrigerator shelf with crumpled newspaper.
Set a cup of water on the top shelf or sprinkle the
newspaper lightly with water. Allow refrigerator to run
for approximately 5-6 days. This method takes a bit longer
but has been effective in removal of strong odors.

g. Buy a commercial odor remover, and follow instructions
exactly. Several companies manufacture a liquid
concentrate which sells for about $3.00 for 1/4 to 1/2
ounce. A couple drops are put on a piece of cotton and
placed in the area to absorb odors, in the cabinet or
in a room.

Three of many brand names are: "Odor-Away" by Wrap-on
Co., available at hardware and hospital supply stores,
"SuperCD" IBL Household Products by Crackerbarrel Sales,
Avenal, New Jersey, available in pet supply department
or special products in grocery, or "Clean-Air" at some
appliance repair shops.

Hospital supply stores carry Dow Chemical Hospital
Disinfectant and Deodorant Spray. Spray into cabinet and
quickly shut the door. Repeat.

4. If none of these methods removes all the odor, then it
has probably penetrated into insulation. Contact an
appliance service company for an estimate on cost of
removing the liner and replacing the insulation. If cost
is too high you may prefer to get a new appliance. It
could be used for occasional cooling of soda pop where
the odor will not get into the beverage.
