SOURCE: missing <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.

Yes, if you do run the recovery disk, it will reinstall windows and the bundled software package, thus removing all of your personal data on the computer. I would highly recommend picking up an external notebook hard drive enclosure, so that you can remove the hard drive from the laptop, and plug it via usb in another computer, so that you may begin the backup process. Unfortunately with those kinds of error messages that you get, the only real cure is to reinstall the entire OS (provided that your hard drive is also intact, it may not be a half bad idea, to try and run SeaTools for Windows (or DOS) on your laptop's hard drive to make sure it's not failing).

SOURCE: missing windows root system32\hal.dll

Hi
There are few different ways that the "missing or corrupt hal.dll" error may present itself, with the first listing being the most common

Use the following links
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000490.htm
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/missinghaldll.htm

Note: if the repair is not successful then you would have to redo the entire OS. This would mean data loss on the computer.

Thanks for using Fixya

Best way to solve the problem is to Use the restore disc or windows installation cd or dvd to install windows into the computer or perform a repair installation if a windows already exists on the computer and the setup can find it.

how to perform a repair installation Follow the steps exactly.

this is for xp, but its similar on 2000 and on vista.

insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

1.When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

if not then the computer is not set to start up from a cd, you can either enter the setup / bios to change that setting OR right when you power up the computer look at the screen it will say what button to press in order to enter boot menu or bios, it will very likely be button F12 or similar, it should say on the screen when you power on.

if it doesn't, then you need to go into the bios and change the boot order so that the computer starts from the CD first.

after that you should be able to start from the cd and install Windows

here's some info on how to work the bios: http://www.whitecanyon.com/how-to-change-boot-order.php

Repeat step 1 when you have changed the boot order.

2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

5.Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

6.Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

7.Ones windows is working you will need the drivers for your computer, they are at the makers website, for hp and compaq. www.hp.com for acer http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.html for all other brands go to google and write Brand drivers. Should get you to the right place. Dell is most likely www.dell.com and so on.

SOURCE: Windows not start. They say: Reinstall <Windows

hi,
HAL.DLL stands for Hardware Abstraction Layer.
It is a Dynamic Link Library that connects to Kernal and Hence your Harware can talk to the software.

The File is available in the installer Disk with some similar name as Hal_ or Hall_.
But Honestly saying, try a safe mode to get to the desktop. Recover as max data possible from your desktop amd documents or my documents to a simple folder saved on a thumbdrive.

Repair the OS.
and check for the stability for say a week. if everything comes back to normal. Its good. else contact me .

Write a comment and vote me to keep in touch!
Bye for now.

Hi,

If it cannot access any of the Advanced Boot Options, you may need to reinstall a fresh copy of the Operating System. However, try to run a hard drive diagnostic software to check if your hard drive has bad sectors.

For advanced troubleshooting on how to reinstall the file (system32/hal.dll) without doing a clean install, check the link below.

Hope this helps.

How to solve this problem <windows root>\system32\hal.dll.

Hi
If you get an error regarding a missing or corrupt hal.dll file, it might simply be the BOOT.INI file on the root of the C: drive that is misconfigured
1.Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.
2.At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
3.Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
4.Type bootcfg /list to show the current entries in the BOOT.INI file
5.Type bootcfg /rebuild to repair it
6 Take out the CD ROM and type exit
OR
Better solution: This seems to always work
expand x:\i386\hal.dl_ y:\windows\system32\ X= cd rom drive letter

Thanks and Regards Aboobacker S

Keep getting this message <window

Hello,
  • "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

  • "<Winnt_root>\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt:
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

  • "Cannot find \Windows\System32\hal.dll"

  • "Cannot find hal.dll"
The "missing or corrupt hal.dll" error displays shortly after the computer is first started. Windows XP has not yet fully loaded when this error message appears. CauseCauses of the "missing or corrupt hal.dll" error include, naturally, a damaged hal.dll DLL file or a hal.dll file that has been deleted or moved from its intended location.Additional causes may include a damaged or missing boot.ini file or possibly a physically damaged hard drive.

Please let me know you have any further questions or concerns.
Thanks.

"<Winnt_root>\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt:

  1. Verify the boot.ini file is found on the computer by using a boot diskette or use your Windows CD to get to the MS-DOS "C:\>" prompt.
  2. From this prompt edit the boot.ini, verify that it is pointing to the correct operating system, and that no anomalies are found within the file. Below is a listing of what to verify
  • If only one operating system is on the computer verify that the boot.ini only has one operating system listed. In some situations an alternate configuration line may be added for the same operating system, leaving the improper line.
  • Verify that the "default=" line as well as the operating system line are the same and that they are pointing to the correct operating system.
Verify that the computer has the hal.dll file

From the MS-DOS "C:\>" prompt quickly determine if your computer has the "hal.dll" file by typing "dir hal.dll /s" at the prompt. If the computer returns a "File not found" message, the hal.dll has been deleted.

To recover this file boot the Windows operating system CD and choose the option to "Restore", "Repair", or "Recover." This option will prompt you for the Windows installation to use, the administrators password and will allow you to restore the proper file. At the MS-DOS prompt type the below command.

expand C:\i386\hal.dl_ D:\windows\system32\

In the above example "D" would be the letter of your CD-ROM drive and "C" the letter of the drive your operating system is installed on. For example, your disc drive may be D: and your hard drive is likely C:.
