Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Dell 4600. The original hard drive was IDE. Reportedly, a SATA hard drive can be installed in this machine, but I don't know how to do that. Different wires and power source. Can someone walk me through it?

Hi

Please check the Serial ATA connectors J8G1 and J8G2 on the motherboard. Now use the sata cables and connect one end to hard disk and other to any of the SATA connectors. Please check Page# 58 (for SATA connector location) and page # 63 for procedure to replace the hard drive--

Dell 4600 Dimension Hardware Manual

or this link-- Dell 4600 Manual

Hope this helps... If it does please do not forget to accept the solution or post back for assistance.

REPLACE HARDDRIVE

for replacing the hard drive, you will either need to attempt a full backup of a drive (google "backup hard drive __state problem__") or start fresh. There are different types of hard drive connectors (IDE, SATA, SATA II, SATA III, etc.) you must make sure you purchase the correct drive when you do so.

if you have an IDE 2.5in laptop drive with 8gb capacity, you could go online and find another IDE 2.5in laptop drive with a 40gb capacity and when you plug it in it will be blank. you can transfer your files over, but it is unwise to transfer the windows installation (if possible) so you will need a windows install disk. these can be downloaded from many places around the internet, and will work with the retail windows activation sticker located on the bottom of your laptop, or the back or side of your desktop.

this is just an idea to point you in the right direction, if you use a search engine, you will most likely find an answer to your problem

I would like to change my hard drive

If you are looking to save just a "small" bit of $ .. 2 - 1GB sticks should be cheaper .. but what is the current configuration . is it 1 - 1GB or 2 - 512MB or 4 - 256MB?

You have the option of IDE or SATA drive so either is an option .. You may want to get a drive copy utility and just "clone/ghost" your current to the new drive and then swap it to master and GO

Upgrade Hard drive

If you open the case and you can see the seta plugs then yes you should be able to install a seta drive. Since the settings are in bios and seta is becoming more of a norm I would assume you will be able to do this with minimal effort. Remember to look at your power supply leads to make sure you have the appropriate plugs. if not you can get an adaptor if one is not supplied with the drive.

Hard drive

at first you have to check it out, whether your hard drive is related on ide or sata. sata is the new technic used now in the recent years. ide is the old technic that comes with the wide bus cables. but sata is a small red colored cable that transfers data more faster than ide.
after that, you have to check it out the mother board settings for connecting with sata cable. because, the older pc have no more settings for sata. if it is available means, no problem to update your hard drive. or you can just go for external hard drives.

Slave drive into Dell Dimension 5100

Yes it does. It may not have an IDE cable if using SATA hard drive, but it does have a port on the motherboard to plug in the cable you take from your 4600.
