Question about Dell Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Dell XPS 720 having continual video problems. Dell has replaced the video card 5 times, replaced the RAM twice, mobo once. Most recent fix was a new Nvidia 8800GT 512MB card exactly a week ago. Last night, video distorted & froze; there was no user interface response. Called Dell support; they had me test the video card by running optical test (from the F8 menu). Test result was fine, but same video problem. Updated the video card drivers; same problem. Then Dell support tech declared that I had a corrupted registry problem which he could fix remotely if I paid for the "software warranty" for $289 (1 yr). Sounds bogus but wanted to get another opinion. Last time I had a similar video problem, replacing the RAM card worked. Any suggestions? Should I pay Dell for software support? Thanks.

Well, if the dell tech said that there's a registry problem, you can try this freeware, click here to download, open the link, click "Download Now" button, wait for 20 seconds and again click "Download file Now" link (don't click anywhere/anything except i've mentioned here), save or run it (i recommend save so that you can also use it later). After the download is finished, install it. Now open the program (i.e. ccleaner), click blue icon "Registry" on the left hand side of the window, and on the right hand side, click "Scan for issues" wait for few minutes until the the scan progress is completed. After the scan is done, click "Fix all selected issues" > "No" > "Fix selected issues" > "Ok" and it'll automatically fix the problems related to Registry. After it's done, clean the system files by clicking the "Cleaner" button > "Run Cleaner". Restart your computer and your system's registry problem will be fixed. If the problem with your graphics still persists, I also suspect your motherboard problem since you've changed several Video cards and still the video problem re-occur.
If you need further help, let me know.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

I have a dell optiplex gx260, without ram it beeps 6 times, with ram it doesnt beep. Power light is steady green and MoBo light is steady amber in both cases. Does it mean the PSU

Try another monitor or video card if it has a separate video card. If it does have a separate video card remove it and attach monitor cable to 15 pin VGA plug integrated on the system brd.

XPS 1330 screen turns black

My first guess is that your video card is starting to go bad. My second guess is the processor needs to have its heatsink reseated. If it is under warranty I would have dell repair it so you don't incur the charge of a new video card.

Dell XPS M2010 Starting Problems

If they've changed everything else, why didn't they replace the power supply? That's the next part to target for replacement, other than the on/off switch (or button) itself. With no system board beep codes it's apparent that the mobo isn't gettting any juice at all.

Also try disconnecting everything from the mobo but the power supply - including pulling add-on cards. One or more attached devices may be contributing to the problem. If it comes to life start adding things back until it fails - you've just identified the culprit.

Good Luck!

Dell XPS M140 - display is pixelated

Pixelation/artifacting is usually indicative of a problem with video RAM (IE: The video card has a hardware problem) Since the Video is integrated into the motherboard, that means a motherboard replacement. ($150 to $200 for a replacement MB on Ebay)
