Sadly I have had 4 bad experiences with reconditioned Dell hardware. All bought directly from Dell they were defective. Dell has no quality control on its reconditioned/refurbished hardware. Before banging your head against the wall too much on this issue I would simply return it. The fault you are describing can be related to a defective wireless lan adapter. -Ravi Shanghavi

Notebook won't connect wifi

Hi, assuming your laptop is switched on.
Above the keyboard on the right side are the three 'Easy buttons'. The one on the left is for the wireless function.

Push this button to activate or deactivate the Wireless LAN. When you activate the wireless LAN function, it will search for a wireless LAN signal automatically (assuming you have the wireless LAN driver installed). Just below the screen on the right side is the Status LED Panel, which show six icons, each with its own LED. The first one on the left indicates Wireless LAN status. When the LED is displaying a green light, it indicates that the system is accessing data from, or retrieving data by wireless LAN. So whenever you press the Easy button, you should see the green status light come on or go off. To repeat, if the light is not on, you need to press the Wireless LAN 'Easy Button'. NOTE! If you can't get the button to come on, you will need to re-install the Wireless LAN driver.

My wireless network adapter is gone? My wireless modem can not connect to my ACER because I do not have a wireless network adapter.

I may not understand you on this because the 5420-5687 notebook should have come with a wireless connection.

Does your "Modem" have both wireless and a hard wired LAN " For instance my "Modem" came only with a hard wire LAN" and no wireless transmitter. I needed to buy a "Wireless Router" to tramsit between the "Modem" and then wireless on my ACER 5420-5687.

If the "Modem" had both the hard wired Lan and a Wireless transmitter it should be able to go directly without the "Wireless Router". If that is true you should see the amber flashing light, on the last in the group of 4 below your touchpad. If it is not flashing as I said above, it is either not sending/receiving or likely not turned on. The on/off switch is alternately turned on/off by sliding the switch below the light to the right.

Hope it helps. I tend to get a little too wordy.

Cant access internet through wireless network.

How do you know your notebook is connected to your wifi AP? Did you try pinging the gateway? If not, open your command window & type "ping 192.168.0.1" (put in your own gateway address.) If you get replies, then ping something outside of your network: "ping 4.2.2.2" (this is a verizon dns server). If you get replies, then "ping yahoo.com". If it does not fail at any of the above steps, you don't have a connectivity problem. If you fail any of the above, then report back & we'll continue the troubleshooting.

Where or how do I find the wireless switch?

On the front of the laptop there is a Bluetooth button, and a wireless button.

On the front edge of the laptop, starting from the Left;

Speaker, Bluetooth button, Wireless button, Power indicator light, Battery indicator light, Microphone-In jack, Line-In jack, Headphones jack, Speaker.

The Bluetooth button has a light in the middle of it. If the light is on, Bluetooth is enabled.
If it is on, turn it off. (Push the button in, let go. The light should be off)

The Wireless button, also has a light in the middle of it. If the light is on, wireless is enabled. Be sure it is on.

During cleaning the virus out, the Bluetooth, and wireless LAN driver may have been corrupted.

Here is Acer Support, and the Drivers Download page,

http://support.acer.com/drivers_download.aspx

On this page you are going to find the wireless LAN drivers, for your Acer Travelmate 4200 PC Notebook.

1.In the Select Product Family box, Left-click on Notebook.
Wait a second, the next box will come up.

2.In the Select Product Line box, Left-click on
Travelmate.

3.In the Select Product Model box, scroll down, and left-click on Travelmate 4200.

You will see there are 3 wireless LAN drivers listed.

1.Wireless LAN - Atheros
2.Wireless LAN - Broadcom
3.Wireless LAN - Intel

Left-click on the orange box, to the left of the appropriate wireless LAN driver you need.
(Orange rectangle with down arrow pointing to a line)

A small window will come up. There is a circle to the left of - Open with,
and a circle to the left of - Save File.

Left-click on the circle to the left of - Save File.
Now go down to the right, and click on OK.

This file will either go to your Documents folder, or it will go to your desktop screen.

In either place, when you see the file name, Double-click right on it.
The Installation Wizard will come up.
Click on Next, Next, and Finish.
(Bottom of each window)

Restart your computer.

To know which wireless LAN driver you need, (Atheros, Broadcom, or Intel), go to Device Manager.

1.Left-click on Start, (Vista logo button)
2.Left-click on Control Panel
3.Left-click on System and Maintenance
4.Left-click on Device Manager

(If you are prompted for an administrator password, or confirmation, type your password)

When Device Manager loads, look at the file tree before you.
Go down to - Network adapters, and left-click on the + sign to the left.

Across from wireless LAN you will see the name.

No wireless network in range. My wireless network is set to automatic but I am getting the message above when I search for wireless networks. I know there are at least three here.

If you are so sure of three wireless networks in range then it could be the HW problem in the laptop. Is the green light indicating WiFi lighting on? May be your WiFi switch is non functional. So switch on the WiFi and then look for LAN. Login and not searching a LAN are two different problems. If you cant search the wire less LAN then how can you log into any. So it has to be HW problem as you cant locate any although there are three available. So start at the WiFI switch.

My wireless system on my laptop is off how can I turn it on? No wireless found in range! Make sure your wireless switch is on how can I put the switch on?

Some laptops have a switch in front next to the wireless light or on the side.

Some laptops use an F key (my toshiba is F8) so to turn on the wireless I would have to turn the switch on in front and then "toggle" the Wireless on by pressing the FN and the F8 keys.
