These machines are not maintenance free like some car batteries claim to be. The require care and tuneups just like your car or mower does. This most likely is a fuel delivery issue and if the unit has any age on it, the time has most likely come to rebuild the carb or at least replace the diaghrams with a kit. The machine may have other issues too, so start at the fuel filter in the tank, observe the condition of the fuel lines and check inside the carb for gum, dirt, and/or varnish. Clean the miniature screen inside the carb and spray the carb internals with a non-flammable brake cleaner aerosol spray.

Check your fuel pressure; if it is within specs, have a muffler shop test your back-pressure from your catalytic converter. There are other things that can cause strange problems like this but it is a process of elimination.

Not good omen. Likely a bearing seized or broke on your crank shaft. knocking is usually an indication of crank shaft problems - it is possible that you have top end damage as well. Prognosis is poor - rebuild / replacement is likely required. Don't plan any long trips - if you drain the oil you may find metal shavings etc... Depending on how bad the damage is you may be able to keep driving it but it does sound bad if you find it hard to keep running - if you do want to limp around for a bit drain the oil and change the filter and keep the oil up to it.
